Ji;ly 1. This will b the second of the five outstanding events of ! the 1-a.tonia spring and summer racing season. The star three-year-olds contesting for the prize will be tried by this race, with its stamina-testing distance cf one mile and one-half as la no other contest la which they will engage during the whole year. It is coming to be recognized that the I.atonia Derby is in a class by ibelf as a contest for three-year-olds, and each passing year finds liie owners of high class thre-year-ohls more and more desirous of winning this fixture cf the western turf. Everything is shaping up nicely for a great race Saturday. A number of owners who believe their candidates will be especially well served by the mile and one-half distance ! that puts this Derby contest in a ci.:s; by j itself among American racing fixtures dignified by the Derby title have made known their intention of being represented In the race, and it is becoming evident that the field will be o;.e of excellent quality, even if it la not as large as In recent years. George F. Bakers John Finn and William Perkins Thibodaux are the more prominent f the wesl rn candidates in training for the race, while Harry Payne Whitneys Olympus and Broomster are the most likely of the eastern C I .:.;!i!:: tea, of the westerners Thibodaux Is the most fancied to win the Latonia Derby. John Finn, which trainer Will j Perkins withdrew from the Kentucky Special, I is regarded as a sure starter in the I erby. i He has been training splendidly and bis last I winning race indicates that be is wv.Cy to traverse the Derby route. James Bowe, Jr., who is handling the Whitney horses here, has about decided i* Mart both clympus and Broomster in the Derby. The younger Rowe does not hesitate to express the opinion that both ceks can successfully negotiate the Derby distance. It Is worthy of note that Isaac Murphy rode five of the first ten winners of this stake, his victories coming with Leonatus, Ber-san. Silver load. Libretto and Kingman. Governor Gray, which won in 1311, and John Gund, a winner in 1514, made tho best time In the stake, each being credited with running the mile and a half In 2:30%.
