June W. — Offered as the attraction of todays program the Mountain Vail y Stakes provided a big surprise when the oddsoo choice, Lady Boas, suffered tie-feat by lit Rose and Delusive. The start in was delayed several minutes and when the j barrier was released Lady Boss was slow to leave. ldcTaggart found an opening and * Bent her to the front with a rush and she ■ soon sprinted into the lead, lit Rose was n the quickest to leave and racing into conten- j tion was close up throughout, while Carmen :: Ipantages was leading Delusive. Entering j the stretch turn lit Rcae was taken to the -; outside of the leader and under vigorous rid- s ing wore dawn the pacemaker and drew « clear through the final sixteenth under pres- ■ next to the sure. Delusive came through inside rail in the deepest going. Lady Boss j tired badly from her early efforts. 3 The ThorndifTe Stable s Captain Scott, mak- ■ iing his inaugural start of the year, was ? of returned the v. inner of the Oakville Handicap, to which attracted much interest from v horsemen and public alike. Captain Scott "■ was installed an odds-on choice in the wagering and came from behind the pa.ee to win, -1 drawing clear In the final sixteenth from l K. L. Boss Sudor, with El Jesmar third. The victory was a most popular one with the public and it practically established Captain * Scott BS favorite for the Canadian Derby. The start was delayed several minutes by the fractious behavior of several of the f starters and when the barrier was released . Sudor was away forwardly with Captain fc Scott in closest pursuit, while the retainer of the field was closely bunched. Sudor establish* d the pace for the greatest part of f the mile and seventy yards journey, but could . not stand off the rush of the winner. The latter was under pressure entering the . jstreteh, responding in a courageous manner the whip, and defeating Sudor through the final eighth. The latter had a safe margin jover El Jesmar, which was a forward factor for the entire race. VALCARTIER TO ELEMENTAL r E Elemental had but little difficulty in ac- counting for the Valcartier Handicap, which was under claiming conditions at three- . quarters, second place going to Manoevre while Some Baby was third, a neck ahead of St. Quentin. The winner was ridden by llcTaggart and f dominated the running from the start. Man- t oevre was slow to find bis stride and was messed about by McDermott. Some Baby carr.o from the rear and closed fast. The Steeplechase was productive of a , spirited and keenly contested race and the Canadian-bred Ammunition was home with , but little to spare from Fair Mac, with j Greek Patriot third. C. K. Harrisons Cour- j teoua would have been a formidable factor , In the race had not one of the stirrup leath- f ers broke and Yf-itoh was forced to ride the j biggest part of the course with but one iron . before falling at the final fence. J Racing this afternoon was conducted under j ideal overhead conditions but over a track that was heavy and with sections of the course inundated. The pronounced mud runners were to the fore and the players had a ] good line on the merits of the different j starters. Favorites were fairly successful during the afternoon. The crowd was well i up to the average attendance and showed h an increase over that of yesterday. Trainer II. McDaniel reported this morning k that the Boss mares Finery and Muttikins , would be retired this fall ana sent to the stud at Kernplands Farm, near Lexington, Ky. i W. C. Weants Ten Can will be on the shelf for some time. The horse was cut on the frog oy a piece of broken glnss. Stewart Polk and J. D. Heard wired J.
