SIGNOR TESIO AND ITALIAN DERB Yj BY SALVATOR. The Italian Derby "Derby Reale" was run at Rome on Thursday, April 20, and resulted in a victory for the strong favorite, Melozzo da Forli, bred and owned by Signor Federico Tesio, and ridden by F. Regoli. There were eight starters and the winner came home five lengths in front, with Sig-frido second, four lengths ahead of Fiorello, third. The value of the race was 100,000 lire pre-war 0,000, of which 75,000 went to the winner, 12,000 to the second horse, 6,000 to the third and 2,000 to the fourth, while 5,000 lire was also awarded to the winners breeder. The distance was a mile and a half. The summary: F. Tesios Melozzo da Forli, b. c, by Signorino Fausta, by Spearmint Regoli ; 125 pounds.. 1 Cisalpine Studs Sigfrido Caprioli; 120 pounds 2 Cisalpine Studs Fiorello Blackburn ; 120 pounds 3 Bellotta Stables Moran Orsini ; 120 pounds . . 4 Agnano, Fridolino, Tortellino and Neronc also ran. Time, 2:39. The totalizator paid S.50 lire for 5 on the winner. As a breeder of Derby winners Signor Tesios record far surpasses anything else of the kind in Italy or any other country. He has now won the "Derby Reale" nine times in the last twelve years. He first scored with Guido Reni in 1911 and came back in 1912 with Rembrandt. Skipping 1913, he next won with Fausta in 1914 and Van Dyck in 1915. In 191C he was unsuccessful, but 1917 saw his colors home first on Gian-pietrina. There was another off year for him in 191S and then came four successive victories, as follows 1919, Meissonier; 1920, Ghiberti ; 1921, Michelangelo ; 1922, Melozzo da Forli. Another extraordinary thing in this series of successes is the fact that his last six winners have all been by the same sire, Signorino, which stallion also sired the winner of 191S, the Marcheso Corsinis Carlone. I The progeny of Signorino have, therefore, won the Derby in seven of its last eight renewals. There is also no record like this in any other country. It need not be thought that these victories have been bloodless ones either. In the Derby for this year, as seen above, there were eight contenders and none of the Tesio winners have started in fields smaller than five, while on one occasion there were ten to face the starter. There were 122 nominations for this year3 renewal. It is further interesting to note that Fausta, the dam of Melozzo da Forli, was herself the Derby winner of 1911. She is probably the only mare on record to win a first-class event of this nature and then produce a winner. And she has produced not merely one but three, as Meisonnier 1919 and Michelangelo 1921 were also from her. Fausta was bred in England, but foaled in Italy. Her sire. Spearmint, won the English Derby of 1906 and was by the great Australian stallion Carbine. She, in turn, was from Madree, a mare bred in France and a daughter of the famous Flying Fox and Maskery, by Mask. This gives the ancestry of Melozzo da Forli a thoroughly inter-i national cast. Signorino, the sire of Melozzo, is a son of Best Man he by Melton and Signorina, the best daughter of St. Simon, she having won eleven races and 14,505 during her turf career and then produced Signorinetta, which in 190S won both the English Derby and the Oaks. No time was taken of tho "Derby Realo" previous to 1904. Since then it has been carefully recorded. The fastest race of the series was that won by Meissonnier in 1919, he running the mile and a half in 2:31, a very fine performance. Gianpietrino had run in 2 :32 in 1917, and in 1914 Fausta dam of Both Meissonnier and this years winner, as well as of Michelangelo, winner last year, as above noted had set the mark at 2 :33. F. Regoli has ridden the last four winners in succession and also scored in 1917, giv ing him five credits. This showing is un-equaled by any other jockeys.
