IS ILLINOIS A "HICK" STATE? Whenever we go to Louisville or Latonia to view a big stake and there see high-class racing as conducted in Kentucky under state supervision, with well dressed, well behaved men and women as spectators, we wonder why we cannot have such racing in Illinois. When we went to Michigan City Tuesday to see Bennio Leonard defend his lightweight title against Rocky Kansas and saw a well-conducted boxing bout with city police anl members of the American Legion maintaining order, we wondered why we cannot have boxing in Illinois. And as we think it over we wonder whether Illinois is a "hick" state, whether those of us who enjoy racing and boxing are a bunch of "hicks" for not raising our collective voices in such a vociferous demand for these sports that it would be heeded at Springfield. Prominent among spectators at Kentuckys stake events, or at any attractive boxing program in the vicinity of Chicago, are members of the state legislature and members of the city council. They know what they like and they know what we like. Again we ask, Is Illinois a "hick" state? Harvey Woodruff in Chicago Tribune.
