I j , DirtiOGHUE IS IN LEAD AGAIN Seems Likely to Head the English Jockeys for Ninth Year in Succession. LONDON, England, June 2,",. Steve Don-oghue, who last year headed the list of winning jockeys on the flat in England, making his eighth successive year in whien he finished at the top of the list. wili. if he continues to show the form he has displayed heretofore this year, in all probability head the list at the end of the present year. Up to date he has had the mount on fifty-eight winners, was placed second thirty-six limes, finished third on thirty-two occasions, and was unplaced 133 times out of a total of 259 starts. Incidentally, his total number of wins in England and Scotland has passed the thousand mark, or 1,0-2 to be exact. Second place in the list goes to C. Eiliott, a young apprentice rider for J. Jarvis, the Newmarket trainer. Elliott, who is in his second year as an apprentice jockey, up to the present has won thirty-one races. Of his US starts this year he was placed second twenty-five times and third fourteen tini"s. He was unplaced seventy-nine times. There is but slight difference in the averages of winning and unplaced mounts for the two leaders. Donoghues average of wins this year is .2025; Elliotts .2020. Donoghues average of unplaced mounts is a trifle lower than Elliotts, however, being .517 and .523. respectively. GOOD SHOWING FOR APPRENTICE. Last year Elliott rode some thirty-nine winners, which is a remarkably jood showing for an apprentice in his first year. He lost his claim to the five pounds apprentice allowance on the opening day of this year, but this apparently has not proved a handicap. He has piloted Golden Myth home first on three occasions this year, first at Kemp-ton Park, when he won the Queens Prize, and at Ascot last week he scored a brilliant double with Golden Myth, finishing first in the Gold Cup and the Gold Vase. He also had the mount on Collaborator when Sir William Cookes great colt won the Trial Stakes at- Ascot Heath. By winning the Derby this year. Donoghue increased his number of winning .-uouuts for the great three-year-old classic to four. Donoghue has ridden two winners of the Two Thousand Guineas, the Newmarket classic, and one winner of the Oaks, the Epsom classic for three-year-old fillies. Donoghue this year rode his first winner in the Grand Priz de Paris, on Sunday, June 25, when he had the mount on M. Ambatie-los Kefalin. The mount was a lucky one for Donoghue, inasmuch as Frank Bullock had been engaged to ride Kefalin, but was unable to ride through injuries. Incidentally Kefalin is the first French horse to win the race, valued at 1G,000 sovereigns, since its resumption following the conclusion of the war.
