J , j 1 j, ; ;t j ; ; j i ; j i : 1 t ; 1 j LORD ASTORS SUCCESS- j FUL RACING CAREER I have received some interesting particulars, and find since 1908 to 1921, inclusive. Lord Astor ran horses in 292 raea, and had never more thannine in training in any one year, the average being considerably less. During this period he won seventy-seven races and gained placed honors in ninety-three, while, in regard to stakes won, last year was his best, the total being 11,110. He has now seventeen brood mares, including such as Hamoaze, Maid of the Mist. Plym-stock. Popinjay, Winkipop, Sunny Jane and Pompadour. The foals of this year include a colt by Gay Crusader Popinjay, a filly by Gainsborough Lady Baba, a filly by Swyn-ford Good and Gay, a filly by Cylgad Pop-ingoal, a filly by Sunstar Pinprick, by Tor-point, and a filly by Gainsborough Maid of the Mist. There are but four yearlings Black Sheep, a well-named brown coit, by Black Jester Lady Baba; Jura, a boy filly, by Gainsborough Maid of the Mist; St. Germans, a bay colt by Swynford Hamoaze dam of Buclian ; and Bright Knight, a bay colt, by Gay Crusader Sunny Jane. This also is a good and simple name. These yearlings should certainly make up in quality for what they lack in quantity though I call to mind that Bayardo himself did not altogether succeed, while Maid of the : Mist, their colt, as a foal, being so over at the knees that it really could not get up from them. Still, he grew into a fine individual, though he never won. It seems a little strange, in view of this experience, that the mare should have been mated in two successive seasons with a Bayardo horse instead of with Sunstar. to which she produced Sunny Jane, Sky Rocket, and Craig an Eran. Despite Lord Astors great success, the Derby has yet eluded him, and he has become a sort of Yellow Jack for that race, having been second four times, with Blink, Buchan, Craig an Eran, and Tamar.
