WHISKAWAY RUNS UNPLACED Added to the Huron Handicap, but Has too Much Weight. Rockminister Wins the Race with Ease, and Leads Throughout Enchantment Canters In. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., Aur,ust 23. A Montfort Jones horse slightly dimmed another equine reputation this afternoon when his Rockminister won all the way through the mile and three-sixteenths of the Huron Handicap and back of him came Horologe, Hephaistos, 25,000 Whiskaway and Law-sons Sweep By. It was the first start of Whiskaway under the Clark silks and the running demonstrated that he was net up to such a contest. As a matter of fact trainer -Barnes started him asa final for his race in the big tnree-year-old Special Saturday, in which he is to meet Kai-Sang. Bunting and Pillory, oth Whiskaway and Sweep By were added starters. Barnes set a severe task for the Clark colt when he sent him over the trying distance with a burden of 132 pounds on his back. He raced well as far he was fit to run. If the race does not knock him out for his engagement Saturday it should do him a world of good for that race, when he will only shoulder 120 pounds. IDE AIi DAY FOR RACING. The day was an ideal one for the sport The track was fast and there was another big crowd out. although the Huron Handicap was the only outstanding feature. It was the eleventh hour decision of trainer Barnes to add Whiskaway to the Huron Hadicap. He had been unable to have the colt work to his satisfaction and decided the race would be the spot to tighten him up for Saturday. Little time was lost at the barrier and when it rose Garner rushed Rockminister to the front and was destined to make every post a winning one until he was a half dozen lengths clear at the end. Fator drove Whiskaway away to keep him up and, Horologe, racing on the outside of him, had him in rather close quarters while going to the first turn. Hephaistos was outfooting Sweep By. For a time on the turn Whiskaway had Horologe headed when the Farrell colt lost some ground by going a bit wide, but when the backstretch was reached the order was changed and Horologe worked into second place, with Whiskaway galloping along on the inside and not far away. Hephaistos also was not far away and Sweep By followed. When going out of the backstretch Fator drew his whip on Whiskaway to keep him up and drove hard for some little distance, but he could get no response from his mount and it was here that he was beaten. ROCKMINISTER SETS FAST FACE. Garner had been setting" "a fast pace with Rockminister and when the stretch was reached permitted him to run at full speed, with the result that he quickly drew out until at the end he was easing up with Garner looking back. Horologe beat Hephaistos a length for second place and in turn was just a head before the tired Whiskaway. Sweep By was three lengths farther back. Trainer Barnes announced after the running that Whiskaway would be a sure starter in the big three-year-old special race of Saturday. Ho. was a thoroughly tired colt at the end of this grueling work. Whiskaway is still the Whiskaway that was the winner of the Carlton Stakes and the Kentucky Special. He Is just as good a colt as ne was then, but he was started in the Huron Handicap when he was plainly not ready for such a race under 132 pounds. A rattling finish came out of the five-eighths dash that was the first race, when Stephen Petits Longboat just lasted to beat Black Friday and Virginius home. At the end the three were fighting it out closely -lapped and in another stride Black Friday would have been the winner. The start was a good one and Mary Pal made the running. Dream Days was close after her and had her headed before the stretch was reached, while Longboat was always in the first flight, though he had begun from an outside position. Black Friday also left from an outside position, but he was not as fortunate as Longboat and after having to race wide was pocketed until well into the stretch, where Kummer had to pull to the outside to find racing room. In the last eighth.Dream Days tired badly and Longboat closed up on her and showed in front, but Black Friday was coming with a great rush and outside of him "Virginius was also closing up rapidly. Right to the last stride Black Friday continued to close up, but he was one short when beaten a head, with .Virginius just a neck farther back. Poor Puss was another that figured in the final rush. James Rowe added blinkers to the equipment of H. P. Whitneys Enchantment and it made a marked difference in his running. He was an easy winner after having overcome a deal of trouble. Bright Tomorrow raced to second place and Aladdin beat Pennon for third money. Aladdin set a great pace and in the early running was followed closest by Paisley and Shamrock. Enchantment was next to the rail, with small chance to extend himself fully. It was not until the stretch was reached that Enchantment had his opportunity, and when it came he quickly rushed up to Aladdin and, racing on by him, won in a canter at the end. Bright Tomorrow caught and passed the tiring Aladdin in in the final eighth, while Shamrock was in close quarters on the inside in the final rush, and it may have cost him third place, for he was going well when he ran into the pocket behind the tiring Aladdin. The race was one of marked improvement over the recent races of Enchantment without blinkers, and ihey will probably remain a part of his racing equipment. Sixteen useful platers made up the field for the seven-eighths of the third race and it resulted in a fighting finish when George Petersons Winneconne just beat Bud Fisher home after a long stretch drive, with Scottish Chief two lengths farther back in third place. In the final eighth Bud Fisher and Winneconne drew away from the others and in the rush to the finish they opened a long lead, with Winneconne just dropping her head down in front. Scottish Chief to reach third place finished in the middle of the track and outgamed the tiring Jock Scot. Charles H. Thierrots Prince James outclassed the selling platers he met in the fifth race and in a sensational stretch rush drew, away to win by a length and a half, while St. Allan, after setting a fast pace, just lasted to take second place by a head from Two Feathers, while Bluffer was only a nose away. At the end of the program Walter J. Salmons Vigil was the winner from Curtis by a rush through the stretch that caught the half brother to Billy Kelly tiring right at the end. Tuxedo ran well and took third place. Fator rushed Curtis away from the barrier like a quarter horse and, taking a big lead, did not give him a chance to take a long breath. When swinging for home he began to tire and Ensor stole up with Vigil, but Fator was still looking back at the final eighth post. Vigil continued to close up and it was not until he was alongside that Fator, in a panic, went to the whip. It was too late then and Vigil went on to be the winner by a half length. Eight lengths farther back Tuxedo was just a length before Prince Regent. Blinkers were added to the equipment of both H. P. Whitneys Enchantment and J. S. Cosdens Henna in the running of the five and a half furlongs condition race that was the second offering.
