CAPITAL RACING AT ERIE Over Seven Thousand Spectators Pleased by Close and Exciting Finishes. ERIE, Pa., August 23. Finishing with a well-timed rush through the stretch Sentimental, in a thrilling finish, headed Rog in the closing strides of the seventh race, which had the best field at Exposition Park this afternoon. Rog, after setting a fast early pace, tired slightly in the final drive. Frank Shannon was a distant third. A crowd of over seven thousand taxed to capacity the accommodations of the plant and witnessed some good racing. Close and exciting finishes were frequent. Dewitt and Pomerene were both hard pressed to score in their respective races by narrow margins. It was only in the final stride that Peggy Eaton earned the verdict in the second race. Elga, Supermaid and Mr. Kruter led at all points in their races. Peggy Eaton pulled up lame after winning the second race. The Cigarette fell badly lame during the running of the sixth. O. Wendell announced today that Grandee bowed a tendon during the running of the seventh race yesterday and will be turned out for the remainder cf the year. Jockey H. S; Jones departed tonight for Des Moines, Iowa, where he will ride J. H. McCools Tenwell in the Des Moines Derby. Robert Shoaf, secretary of the Conneaut Lake Park, Pa., Racing Association, was a visitor here today. He reports that several stables have already arrived at the lake course, awaiting the opening of the meeting on Monday next. Word was received here today from P. A. Jones that he has eighteen colts at his Par-nell, Missouri, farm. Mostly by Seth. "The finest looking crop I ever raised," Mr. Jones reports. J. A. Parson and .O. L. Foster deposited a claim for Virge before the running of the second race. In the draw Foster secured the mare for 00.
