TALK OF CONTEST SATURDAY Whiskaway Sure to Go and Rockminister May Be Added to the Announced List. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., August 23. The adding of Whiskaway and Sweep By to the Huron Handicap-gave that race a different complexion and increased the interest in a race, which has brought about so many stirring finishes. There was a rumor about the condition of Whiskaway, which is in a stable where they have nothing that can make the big chestnut son of Broomstick extend himself. It was thought that he was short of the sort of work that. would make him stick it out from end to end. There was a mob around the colt while he was being saddled. On the way to the post Whiskaway was irritable and lunged out with Fator. For s. time it appeared he would get away with the boy. Outrider Murray with his gray pony took him in hand and, after a moments delay, the field was dispatched in good order. Rockminister showed his good class by taking the lead and never relinquishing it to win in time that equaled the record for the race, the 1 :57 of Johren, made in 1918. After the race G. O. Barnes, who has charge of the Clark horses, said : "I am well satisfied with the showing of my horse at the weights. I couldnt get anybody to work with him and I was compelled to send him out although he had a lot of weight up. The race will do him a world of good and I look to see him go well in the Special race on Saturday, for which ho will surely start." A wag said that the stable over which Kay Spence is presiding ought to be called the "Giant Killer Stable," because of Surf Rider taking Morvich into camp a. few days ago, followed by todays downfall of Whiskaway. The special race is exciting the most eager interest and applications are pouring in for reservations at the course and the various hotels. It may be the biggest week-end crowd in the history of the track. Special trains will carry the crowd from Albany; Troy and other points up and down the Hudson River. Superintendent Clare says he will have a track that "will be in keeping with the contest, if no rain falls between now and the day of the race. The weather sharps say the indications are for cloudless skies for the big day. It was learned late today that Montfort Jones was so pleased with the showing of Rockminister that he may send the colt to the post in the Special three-year-old race. Mr. Jones is a fine sportsman and is in the sport for the pleasure he gets out of his horses. He has been a liberal buyer of yearlings and will no doubt breed as extensively as his brother, B. B. Jones, who. owns the lovely old Audley property near Berryville, Va., in the Shenandoah Valley. Rockminister would be a decided addition to the Special race and will not lack a following.
