BEGIN WORK AT HAWTHORNE Preparations for Revival of Chicago Racing on September 30 Now Under Way. WINDSOR, Ont., August 28. Joseph A. Murphy today received a wire from Chicago that an agreement had been reached with the United States government in respect to the buildings on the Hawthorne track at Chicago and big forces of men were put to work today getting the track in condition for the meeting opening September 30. Thirty men have been put on the stables. All of the scaffolds on the grandstand have been finished ready for the carpenters. The work on the track proper will be started tomorrow and by the end of the week a force of sixty men will be at work. Judge Murphy announced today that he had practically completed his officials. He will serve as presiding steward, in addition to giving personal supervision to all departments. Fred W. Gerhardy will act as racing secretary. He is at work on the book, which will be in the hands of the printer by the end of the week. Charles T. Essig will serve as associate steward. George T. Miller will do the starting and John Carey act as paddock judge. A delegation of prominent horsemen closely affiliated with the Thoroughbred Horsemens Association spent two hours in conference with Judge Murphy Sunday. They heartily approved of the plan to operate as a club this year. They realized that better control of the crowd can be had, a cleaner proposi- tion in every way presented, and when the bill which is being drawn for the legislature January 1 is presented it -.vill have behind it an organization of the best people in the West. The club dues will be 0, which will admit members and ladies to all privileptes during the coming meeting. None but club members will be admitted to the grounds, except the usual privileges which will be extended to horsemen. It is planned to organize the club on democratic lines, only decent citizenship being, required for membership. The drive for members will bo started this week with Mr. Essig, an expert on these things., in charge. Special offices will be opened for the drive.
