SMITH YEARLINGS SELL WELL Star of the Sale a Superman Colt Bought by Admiral Grayson Thirty-Five Sold. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., August 28. Rear Admiral Cary T. Grayson carried a yearling bay colt by Superman Princess Ormonde to ,000, the top figure of the James B. Smith sale, held in the Fasig-Tip-ton mart Friday night. He met with plenty of competition before he finally obtained the youngster, as Montfort Jones, Fred Good and Max Hirsch also bid on him, but they fell out one after another after passing the ,000 mark. This colt is one of the best-looking horses of his age offered at the sales this year and surprise was expressed that he did not bring more money. The Smith yearlings, thirty-eve in number, were disposed of for a total of 9,000, an average of ,982.85 each. l..ey are products of the late H. T. Oxnards Blue Ridge Stud in Virginia and were purchased in a single band by the California coal magnate, who intended to race them. He later changed his plans, however, and decided to sell the entire band. They are the progeny of Vulcain, Superman and King James. While the attendance at last nights sale was up to the standard of previous nights, quite a few of the most liberal buyers, among them Samuel C. Hildreth and J. C. Milam, were absent. The bidding lagged except in spots, but, as a rule, the horses were sold for what was considered fair sums. One of the purchasers last night was Samuel H. Harris, theatrical magnate, who acquired three yearlings at a cost of ,300. He busied himself right off the reel, as he obtained the first colt offered, a brown son of King James , Disillusion, for ,700.
