WILLIAM P. THOMPSON DEAD NEW YORK, N. Y Septmcber 23. William Payne Thompson, one of the valued supporters of the American turf and of amateur horsemanship and who was prominent in society in New York, Newport and Philadelphia, died Wednesday in the Presbyterian Hospital, after a long illness. He was fifty years old. Although Mr. Thompson came to the track seldom in recent years, he was fond of the turf and, with good health, would have been one of its most ardent supporters. Ho bred and owned Nedna, winner of the Alabama Stakes at Saratoga, and owned the filly LAlouette in partnership with his brother Louis when she won the Futurity with Jimmy Rowe training her. The dead sportsman was named for his father. Col. W. P. Thompson, who was president of the lead trust, and who bought Brookdale Stud from David Dunham Withers. Colonel Thompson died at a period when he was taking a keen interest in breeding and racing. That fino ; filly, One I Love, was the apple of his eye, ; and she won many fine races for him as a i two and three-year-old. The late W. P. I Thompson was a fine wing shot and a salmon fisherman, going to the Restigouche annually and killing some of the largest fish 1 taken from those famous waters.
