I J 1 J J , , I J . . j CHATTERTON BY INCHES Gives Weight and a Beating to Rouleau in Great Race. Kclleys Colors Twice Successful Marine Corps Repeats Largest Attendance of Meeting Is Present. LEXINGTON, Ky., September 23. In a desperately fought duel through the stretch that had the big throng in a frenzy of excitement, Frank J. Kelleys Chatterton tri-j umphed over Rouleau by a matter of inches in the mile and a sixteenth handicap featuring todays program. On his showing today there can be no doubt of Chattertons high class for he conceded twelve pounds actual weight to Rouleau, while Mulciber and H. E. Coleman were also favored extensively by the weight concessions. Despite his impost of 115 pounds, Kennedy rushed the Kelley. representative into the lead as soon as the barrier was released and he kept the colt at a fast pace with the result that the first mile was covered in the good time of 1:37 over a dull track. Rouleau also was at his top form and kept Chatterton in close sight for the first three-quarters and ljust before reaching the stretch he moved ,up with a rush that threatened to give him the lead, but Chatterton buckled to his task with firmness and disputed every inch of ground during the stretch and surprised ad-I ditionally by actually outgaming Rouleau in the final strides. H. E. Coleman and Mulci-.ber were far in the rear of the pair with the first mentioned leading. Chatterton and his rider were accorded a big ovation on their return to the scales. By far the largest attendance that has been .seen at the Lexington track this year was on hand this afternoon to view the sport. There were many notables in the crowd, including Governor Edwin P. Morrow. The improved track conditions and the well balanced sport offering furnished immensely interesting racing. The Kelley colors, which have been eminently successful here, figured in another victory when Rencelaw completed the double by beating home seven other maiden two-year-olds that started in the second race. Like Chatterton he enjoyed favoritism and was the leader throughout. Marine Corps, which scored an easy victory in his previous start, repeated in better style in todays inaugural dash when he came from far back in the last quarter to overhaul Royal Dick and beat him home by half a length. James B. Brown was looked on with much favor in the race, but he never figured to any serious extent at any stage of the contest. Mose Gpldblatt was among the arrivals. He came over to have the stalls in readiness for the reception of the Harry Payne Whitney colts that are due to arrive tomorrow. Kay Spence .will ship a car of the Mont-fort Jones horses to Latonia Monday. A number of other owners will ship consignments the same day and the exodus for the Milldale track will be on in earnest. A special train will leave here Wednesday night at 8 oclock for the accommodation of owners, trainers, jockeys and turf followers desirous of reaching Cincinnati after the closing racing here. The present outlook is for at least twelve starters going to the post in the rich Breeders Futurity Stakes, to be run on he closing day, September 27. They will embrace the cream of the two-year-bid division here, including the unbeaten Indian Trail.
