EVERYONE WELCOME i General Public to Be Admitted to the Hawthorne Track. Change of Plans Made Necessary by Popular Demand for an Open Door Policy. The Illinois Jockey Club yesterday listened to the written and spoken protest of many persons in and out of the city and to the plea of hotel men that visitors were loath to take club memberships when they would probably be in the city only a few days and decided to throw the gates of Hawthorne open to the public at a reasonable price for the meeting. For Saturday the admission will be ?3 for men and for women, and on other days for men and for women. These prices include the war tax. There was a growing impression that the club was designed for exclusive patronage. Nothing is further from the intentions of ita officers, who design to build the club eventually into the most democratic organization in the country and to make its membership country-wide. Those who have taken memberships will be sent daily tickets for their friends to make up the difference in the price and the work of signing members will proceed during the meeting. If horsemen outside of Chicago have any doubts about the condition of the Hawthorne track Exterminator dispelled them yesterday when he galloped three-quarters in 1:13. Horsemen who arrived during the day pronounced the track better than ever in its history. Judge Murphy yesterday decided to go back to Mr. Kilmers original offer to run the great horse against time. With Grey Lag, Boniface and Kai-Sang not available, and Bunting and Lucky Hour heavily engaged in the East, no horse is in sight that could make the old horse extend himself. Mr. Kilmer will be here today and Judge Murphy will take up with him the plan to send Exterminator against the track record at a mile and a quarter. The Association will lease three pace-makers for the day. All will be sent out with colors up in a parade with Exterminator. One will leave the barrier with him and run to the quarter pole, when the second pace-maker will pick him up and carry him to the head of the stretch and the third will bring him home. A sterling silver cup with the inscription on one side "Exterminator, Champion of Champions," on the other, "Presented to Willis Sharpe Kilmer by the Illinois Jockey Club to commemorate revival of racing in Chicago," will be presented to Mr. Kilmer. A handsome purse will also be offered for the trial. Judge Murphy will take these matters up with Mr. Kilmer on his arrival today. The Hawthorne record for the distance is 2:04, made by Dodge when a three-year-old. This should easily be in reach Of Exterminator. The Toronto contingent arrived and were put away snugly. The Kentucky shipment will leave tonight. Two car-loads are on the way from Latonia and H. T. Palmer is coming by express from New Kensington. Dr. Joseph Kaiser, state veterinarian, was appointed official veterinary of the track. The work of pulling down the government buildings in the infield is moving fast. They will leave some scars, but otherwise the track will look spick and span.
