HA WTHORNE TURF NOTES AND OTHER NEWS ITEMS OF INTEREST Owner C. Irby said yesterday morning that the attending veterinarian holds out little hope for the recovery of Rising Rock, whkh was taken down with lung fe.er en route to Hawthorne a week ago. The American Remount Association Saturday morning appointed Thomas E. Bourke, secretary of the Illinois Jockey Club, as its Illinois representative. R. S. Eddy, manager of the Fair Grounds track at New Orleans, vas so enthused over the Hawthorne card of l iday that he postponed his departure for Nev Orleans, and again Saturday viewed the races from the judges stand. Tommy Magee, who was secretary to Ed Corrigan in the old days of Hawthorne, was an arrival from Kansas City, and was amazed at the size of the crowd. He will remain for the remainder of the meeting. L. J. Keating of Louisville, Ky., spent the week-end as a visitor and saw his filly Fer-nandos run in the opening dash. Dr. M. C. McArthur and wife journeyed from Detroit to see their colt Dr. McArthur run, and had the pleasure of seeing him win the opening dash on the first muddy track of the meeting. F. R. Irwin claimed Grayssian for ,700 from T. Hogarth after winning the third race of the afterncon. War Pennant pulled up slightly lame after running in the second race. The program books for" the remainder rf the meeting were distributed among horsemen Saturday morning. Judge Murphy received a telegram from jeekey J. Dreyer Saturday advising him that judge Nelson had nothing -against him and asking whether or not he could ride at Hawthorne. Judge Murphy wired him it was all right for him to accept mounts here. The boy will arrive Monday morning.
