Y., October 7. Sometimes sour old Mad Hatter had nothing to bother him in the running of the Pierrepont Handicap, at a mile and a quarter, at Jamaica today, and just for that he shattered the track mark for the distance when he won easily in 2:03. The previous best mark was 2:06. After a week of perfect racing weather there was a change that made conditions decidedly disagreeable, and drizzling rain fell almost all of the afternoon. It was not enough to affect the going, as was testified by the Mad Hatter performance, but it made the sport decidedly uncomfortable for the big crowd that was out. - Sedgcfield and Hephaistos were the only ones to start against Mad Hatter, and there was no part of the running in which they Were close enough to the son of Fair Play to have the ghost of a chance. Sande rated the big fellow along under stiff restraint during the early running, but even under this restraint his pace was fast enough to take him into a long lead. SANDE ON OUTLOOK. Through the backstretch he was still under a double pull, with Hephaistos lengths away and leading Sedgefield by a comfortable margin. There was no change in the positions and Mad Hatter was still galloping along easily as he swung into the short stretch, but Sande was watching him closely and had to tap him once on the nose to prevent his running out. At the end Sedge-field readily caught Hephaistos, but he was still lengths back of Mad Hatter. The old fellow had won and had broken a track record, but he was pinning his ears back when it was accomplished. The race was worth ,850 to the winner. Henry Watersons Brainstorm has come to be rather a dependable sort. He followed his defeat of Mad Hatter on the opening day Continued on sixteenth page. The son of Peter Pan Bubble, well ridden by little E. Bell, scored easily from Horologe; with My Reverie third. Back of them were Little Chief, Bees Wax, Irish Brigadier and -Pirate Gold. Irish Brigadier and My Reverie cut out most of the running, but Bell was never far away with Brainstorm and when the leaders showed signs of tiring he brought him up with a rush. McAtee moved with Horologe at the same time and at the end they both readily ran past My Reverie, after she had put Irish Brigadier away. Little Chief met with some interference in the running and when in the stretch he was forced to go wide to find racing room. He closed up some ground, but there was no time that he was close enough to cut any figure. John E. Madden has sold Broomflax to Fred Burlew. R. O. Miller will train Liberty Girl for B. Leight, who claimed her out of the race in which she ran Friday. Before the races Cirrus, with Sande in the saddle, worked an easy mile in 1:42. The fractions were 26, 51, 1:17 and 1:42. At the end he was being stopped by Hildreth. After Lady Inez won the opening race for J. A. Coburn she was claimed by Charles Sanford for ,605. She was later sold by him to Miss E. Forshay and Sanford will train her. Louis Tauber has arrived at Belmont Park with the sixteen August Belmont yearlings he had at Saratoga. The young thoroughbreds are a good looking band. Charles F. Hill, manager of the Thoroughbred Sales Company, will leave for Maryland this week to arrange a sale of horses in training during the Pimlico meeting of the Maryland Jockey Club. This meeting continues from October 31 to November 11 and already Mr. Hill has several consignments for his sale. There was many a change made in the equipment of the runners in the first race. Blinkers were taken from Rork and they were added to the equipment of Sea Tag in the Montague Handicap. Bees Wax had blinkers added to her equipment. In the sixth race Battersea was tried without blinkers and they were added to the rigging of both Amusement and OCorra.
