FRENCH MUTUEL WAGERING In Spite of Marked Decrease Early in the Year 1922 Totals Are Up to Standard. PARIS, France, October 31. According to figures supplied to the French Deputies by M. Queuille in his report on the agricultural estimates legal betting on horse races showed a distinct falling-off during the first half of the present year. As compared Avith the corresponding period of last year the decrease was 131,048,730 francs in bets made at the pari-mutuel booths. The decline was especially marked in the Paris district. In the provinces there Avas an increase. A revival, however, has taken place in the second half of this year, and in all probability the total will be well over 1,000,000,000 francs, or about the same as in 1920 and 1921. Pari-mutuel bets are subject to a tax of 11 per cent, Avhich is set aside for various useful purposes. Out of the money thus collected between January 1 and September 15, lVi per cent, or 11,645,939 francs, will go to horse breeding, 2 per cent, or 15,527,920 francs to charitable organizations, one per cent, or 7.01S.2S1 francs to the improvement of local water supplies, one per cent each to charitable organizations and local water supplies in the de-astated regions, and one-half of one per cent, or 3,881,9S0 francs, to the encouragement of agriculture.
