MAXIM AC SURPRISES Unexpectedly Triumphs in Twin Cities Handicap at Bowie. - - Rockminister Big Disappointment Copper Demon Again Wins Bad Fall in Third Race. HOWIE. Aid., November 2.1. For the feature offering at Howie this afternoon Ihere was the Twin Cities Handicap, over the mile and seventy yards distance, and It furnished a complete rout for the New Yorkers when G. L. Hlackfords Alaxlmae was winner and C. K. Harrison, Jr.s, Paddle, a. Canadian performer, look second place from Frank E browns llephaistos. Robert L. Gerryn Emotion was a good fourth and Alontforl Jones Uockminlster, the compierer of Whisk away. Lucky Hour and Hunting, was a bad last all the way. The race was for three year-olds and the field the best exclusively for that age. that has been shown at the meeting. It was the llrst appearance of Uockminlster under silks at this meeting and his race suggested that he does not like the Howie going. There was no part of the nice that he showed any of the class that gives him high place in the history of the three-year old racing of the year. The live that raced were sent away In good alignment and Paddle was the one to go out In the lead, with Emotion and Aluximnu closely lapped and leading llephalstes. Emotion lost ground on the llrst turn when Lang took her wide and Alaxlmae kepi her well out when the backstreteh was reached, llephaistos saved ground and he was galloping fast under a slight restraint. In the backstreteh -Paddle increased his lead to a couple of lengths ami Emotion and ALtxImac continued to follow htm, racing close together, but llephaistos was going so well that he looked all over the winner when the far turn was reached. There he moved up on the inside, while al the same time Lang moved up with Emotion, but Alarl-nelll called on Alaxlmae al the same lime and the Hlackford colt kept her wide In the run to the stretch. Paddle was still showing the way when he made the turn for home, but he was tiring and Alaxlmae was going faster every stride Lang rode Emotion hard and as he did so the filly swerved over and bothered 1 Icphaislos slightly. Then in the last eighth Ahuximac shook off Paddle to win going away by two lengths, llophaistos was racing fast at the end, but lie could not unite catch Paddle, being just a stride short of second place. Emotion had tired at the end and Uockminlster was last all the way. TAjranum-: ruAernwi.i.Y i.ki t. The Old Dominion Purse was the second best offering of the afternoon and in it there was another bit of hard luck cam" to Tom llcaley when Tangerine, which h sent to the post for Richard T. Wilson, was virtually left al the post and off so badly that Afarinelll made no effort to catch his opponents. This was over the mile and a sixteenth distance, and Copper Demon was the winner, making it his second score al the meeting for O. P.. Akers. At the end lie just beat J. E. Davis Reparation by a length, which in turn was six lengths be fore Alontforl Jones Rouleau, with John Paul Jones, racing for W. Fenwlck. fourth Tangerine caused some delay at the post and he kept one of the trackmen busy. Then when the barrier was sprung he was side ways and he would not start. Reparation was at once taken out to set the pace and Welner sent him Into a lead of a couple of lengths before the backstreteh was reached. Copper Demon was rated along hack of hint by Smalhvood, and through the early stages John Paul Jones raced with him. while Rouleau was slow to find his racing legs. 11 was not until the stretch was reached that Copper Demon moved up on Uepara t lun, but when he did ho was soon alongside ami ho readily outgamod the Davis tlire-year-old through the lasl eighth, lo win g lug away. UPCADO lttUMSIM.S IPSlT. .1. II. Sklnkors Hucado was winner of h six and a half furlongs of the second race for two-year-old platers, healing home J. A Coburns Little Hope, while James Evun.V Adventuress was the one to save third. Utile Hope began quickly bul soon gave way lo lllllhouse. and he was the one to cut out most of the pace, but Hucado wa t not far away and at the head of the streti h raced lllllhouso into defeat to come on and win by a length. Little Hope was badly pocketed uuliig to the stretch turn and then as sho made her move she swerved over behind the winner and did not have a fait running chance. It Is probable that had Kuuiiner been ablu lo keep Uvv utmlght tilte would have been the winner. Avalanche raced Iurwardly all the vn, Ooiititmcd on eighth iiiK" MAXIMA SURPRISES Continued from first page. while Hillhouse tired badly after having been used up in the pacemaking. There Avas an accident came out of the three-quarters of the third race .when three horses Apex, Afawrcoron and AVraith all wont down in the backstretch. Fortunately the riders--Mc Lane, Mart, and Bell all es-caper serious injury and the horses were net badly hurt. It was shortly after leaving the post that the accident happened. The winner of this turned, up in Cornelius Fellowes May Blossom in a driving finish with .1. Cahthans Httahe, and right at the end Garner played an important part when he outrode Lang, who was astride thick! son of Lovetie. Cum Sah Avas t one to cut out all the running and he fought it out with gameness to the last eighth, where he tired when Kttahe challenged and then along came May Blossom to take the purse in the last stride. Two-year-olds that had nt won two races came together in the opening five and a half furlongs dash and the Avinner turned up in Bomping Home, from the Greentree Stable. Kdward B. McLeans Noel ran second and third Avas the portion of Montfort Jones Dan VI. OSullivan. The result came as a big surprise when the Nevada Stock Farms King Charming Avas unable to take any part of the purse. Johnny McTaggart had the mount on Bomping Home and after getting the colt off forwardly hustled him along and practically dominated the running all the way. At Iho end he was doing his best to be winner by a length and Xoel was second by a sho tor distance, while Iennon just nosed out Walter J. Salmons El Dorado for the short end of tiie purse. There did not appear to be much excuse for King Charming unless it is possible that he does not like the Bowie track. He was away well in motion and through the early ftages was close after Romping Home, but lie could not hold his position and was shuf-J.ed back rather badly. August Belmonts Felside Avas one of the company that ran a better race than may be shown by the chart. She began from the outside and was taken back at the first turn. Then when Rice made his move, with her he kept exceedingly wide and site was running fastest of all at the end. C!. li. CSoodacres Plucky was good enough in the mile and three-sixteenths of the sixth race to lead from "end to end" and beat a cheap band. Bark I-Iorsei was the one to race second throughout and AVilliam Ca-hilFs The Roll Call, after being outrun -through the early stages was up in tUtt-to beat Attorney by a narrow "margin for third place. In the last sixteenth and when he seemM to have a possibk! winning chance Dark Horse swung .py-er behind -Plucky and had to be taken up and taken to the outside. Plucky" was tiring, but lasted to be winner by half a length.
