MELBOURNE LINE RECORD High Position of Hurry On in the English Sire List of 1922 Re ¬ calls Some Interesting Data It is sixtyfive years since Hurry Ons tail male ancestor Melbourne headed the list of winning sires and none of his descendants or any other scion of Matchem had in the interim repeated the achievement None has climbed anything like so near the top as Hurry On who this year takes second place to Lemberg LembergBetween Between 1S73 and 1880 no descendant of Melbourne reached the first twenty in the winning list and it was not until Barcaldine came along that any of his scions got into the first three Young Melbourne by reason of his Pantaloon cross got some very soft stock and Barcaldine was altogether over ¬ shadowed by St Simon even in his most palmy days daysThere There is little doubt that Barcaldines very inferior dam Ballyroe which was by the roaring Bclladrum accounted for the marked discrepancy between his racing and stud career She was a wretched race mare In addition to Barcaldine she bred King George by Kingcraft and Brave by Uncas both bad selling platers though after Mr Abing ton Baird tired of Brave the horse won a few steeplechases for Mr Arthur Tales stable Xor was Barcaldine a great sire of brood mares in comparison with Galopin Isonomy Hampton Hermit Bend Or Ayrshire Galli nule and the immortal St Simon In the list of brood mare sires he never rose higher than seventh and was very seldom in the first twenty twentyMarco Marco and Marcovil were no more than good handicap horses but Hurry On repre ¬ sented a good weigh tforage standard and his son Captain Cattle Sir Visto in895 and Signorinetta in 1908 are the only tail male descendants of Melbourne which have won the Derby since Blink Bonny was suc ¬ cessful sixtyfive years ago agoIt It is not without significance that Captain Cuttles dam is by Cyllene which headed the list of winning sires in 1909 and 1910 and is the sire of Polymelus the leader in 1914 1915 1916 1920 and 1021 Cyllene is also sire of Lemberg which has beaten Hurry On by a small margin this year Mankato in English Sporting Chronicle
