Here and There on the Turf Our Illustrious Twenty Sire List ListMcGees McGees First Due to Exter ¬ minator and Firebrand FirebrandRacers Racers That Gave the Others Their Standing It is notable that in the first twenty suc ¬ cessful sires of 1922 four are dead These are Celt Ultimus Jack Atkin and Star Shoot the latter having led the list of American sires in five different years Another notable fact is that the two leaders McGec and Wrack are both English horses Almost every year one or two star racers give the stallion his place on the list and 1922 was no exception to that usual rule Had it not bean for Extermina ¬ tor McGee would not have headed aU the stallions while Firebrand gave valuable aid in placing him in the post of honor honorWrack Wrack owed his position of being second in the list to such good ones as Devastation Little Chief Knobbie and Careful CarefulFair Fair Play with only thirty representatives was third and the twoyearold Dunlin was more responsible for his place than any other although Mad Hatter was not far behind him in point of money earned earnedCelt Celt the dead sire that finished fourth had sixty performers that help to his total and the number played an important part al ¬ though without Donges and Little Celt he would have been much farther down in the list listOlambala Olambala with his thirtyfour performers would hardly have a place in the first twenty had it not been for the earnings of Pillory the best money winner of the year This threeyearold by taking the Prenkness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes gave the son of Ornus his place of importance importanceSweep Sweep had fiftynine performers and Bon Homme was his best although his place was obtained by the combined efforts of several of his progeny progenyRebuke Rebuke and Lady Madcap were the two that mainly made it possible for Dick Finncll to finish seventh on the list and he had fifty four that helped him along in amassing the total totalWhisk Whisk Broom II although as low as eighth on the list had a remarkable record when it is remembered that he had only twentyone performers His best was Whiskaway and his other most successful ones were Goshawk Nedna and Crest a aBallot Ballot had many a representative when sixtyfour of his progeny contributed to his total and Bo McMillan was his best winner winnerOld Old Broomstick was represented by forty six and Dr Clark with winnings in excess of 27000 was his best contributor contributorVulcain Vulcain the stallion purchased during the year by James Butler came next on the list and with only twentynine performers showed an excellent total His best winners were Hephaistos and Bunga Buck while both Mulci ber and Bluemont helped out materially materiallyUltimus Ultimus now dead owed his position to thirty performers and of them McKee and Heeltaps stood out prominently over the others othersPeter Peter Pan only had sixteen to give him his place and of these Brainstorm and Tryster both winners of amounts in excess of 20000 were his best contributors although Exodus Prudish and Hullabaloo were three others of his that won in excess of 10000 10000Uncle Uncle did not show any outstanding horse but with fiftyfive representatives he took his place in the coveted list listJack Jack Atkin another of the dead sires had fortythree performers and Desha Breckin ridges Braedalbane was the best winner of the band bandThe The dead Star Shoot for so long the pre ¬ mier American sire owed his place to Grey Lag of the fortytwo that raced for him himWithout Without the earnings of Edict and Sennings Park Jim Gaffney would not have had his place on the list listOf Of all the twenty the showing of The Finn is the most remarkable when it is seen that with only thirteen performers there were twenty seven races won for a total of 108231 He sent such good ones to the races as Oceanic KaiSang Zev and Bud Lerner LernerMarathons Marathons best representatives of the thirty two that raced for him were Procyon Pris mar and Diadema DiademaOgden Ogden the last of the twenty and now twentynine years old had thirtythree at the races and it was Captain Alcock that made it possible for his nams to be in the list Cap ¬ tain Alccck was the winner of the Suburban Bowie and Pimlico Cup Handicaps for the honor of this old stallion stallionThe The list teaches many a lesson It tells of the solid potent stock horses as well as those that beget sensational racers Taking a line through the number of performers and the races won there could be some marked re ¬ visions made in stock horse excellence excellenceIn In such a revision both The Finn and Whisk Broom II would take a much better position in the race for sire laurels The winnings of their progeny when compared with the number of performers for some of the others give them an infinitely better average Peter Pan is another whose showing was remark ¬ able when considered on the basis of the num ¬ ber of performers performersThe The revision would also tend to demonstrate that James Butler made no mistake when he purchased Vulcain for his East View Stud at Tarrytown N Y
