COMMANDERROSSFEYLANCE Qualifies for Coffroth Handicap in a Smashing Performance King of the Spa and Romany Carry Panic PanicColors Colors to Double Yictory Brilliant Ilay IlayDeals Deals Kinglike by a Xosc SAN DIEGO Cal March 17 Several can ¬ didates for honors in the rich Coffroth Han ¬ dicap to be run here Sunday March 25 showed their wares yesterday in the Nestor Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth and tho race proved an easy victory for Commander J K L Ross Fcylance Carrying the im ¬ post of 116 pounds the strapping son of As ¬ sagai and SL Fey went to the front at the rise of the barrier and with jockey Claver having him under restraint at all times ho made every post a winning one and eventu ¬ ally won in a canter by two and a halt lengths In second place raced Krewer the favorite which disappointed many Jockey B Kennedy had the mount on the Crane representative and although the pace was slow he elected to rate him behind the leader Then when he chose to let him down the horse failed to respond and had to be ridden out to beat John S Reardon for second honors The crack longdistance run ¬ ner Georgie carrying the silks of Colonel R L Baker ran a promising race to be third He had 116 pounds up and for the first threequarters was badly outpaced However he gained ground steadily in the final rush and the finish saw him going fast ¬ est of all allThe The William Daniel colors which have graced the winners ring so often of late were again prominent when they were car ¬ ried to a successful ending in two races In the fifth King of the Spa a son of the old campaigner Fizer now racing at Tijuana showed the way to a fair band of sprinters He had jockey R Mozer a heretofore maiden rider in the sadle but this did not deter his stable connections from wagering with what might be termed extreme confidence King of the Spa which is a sort of a rogue was loath to leave the paddock and much time was used getting him to the post When the field was finally sent on its journey the Daniel horse was slow to begin However he raced through the field like a shot out of a gun By the time the lower turn was reached he was in front and from there on he can ¬ tered home to win by a length and a half from El Roble and Lady Leonid LeonidIt It was Romany in the seventh a gallop of a mile and seventy yards that completed the double for the Daniel connections Jockey Mcrimee who was at the reins on this black gelding bided his time before making his move This came entering the stretch where ho urged him into the lead to win in a mild drive from Coffield and Reap ReapAbout About as bad a band of route horses as could be mustered answered the bugle in the opener but it proved a good contest from a spectacle standpoint as three horses fin ¬ ished heads apart The winner turned up in Tom Brooks which got the decision over Dienero which in turn beat Cork a neck for second place placeComing Coming from last position Jay Mac with jockey Pool aboard managed to down Chat tan Court in the final strides to win the sec ¬ ond another distance affair The winner had to be tons the best for he was almost knocked down while rounding the first turn turnThe The eighth and concluding dash witnessed Brilliant Ray getting a nose decision from the semiblind horse Kinglike The latter had all of his usual speed but bore out badly in the stretch which cost him the race Jack Bauer the one to take third money seemed up against it with these speed mar ¬ vels and was outrun to the stretch where he made up some ground to take Harry Ds measure for the consolation end of the purse purseW W Daniel of Chicago owner of the good horses which A G Blakely brought here from New Orleans is an arrival here In company with him came J K Brown prom ¬ inently connected with the Armour Packing Company CompanyJohn John L Marchbank today traded horses with J Cooker giving the latter the three yearold Pud for the aged mare May Mauls by Mr Marchbank acquired the mare for breeding purposes and will ship her to his Heather Stock Farm near Pleasanton Cal
