BELMONT JUMPING STAKES Brook Handicap Steeplechase and andAppleton Appleton Memorial Head List Listof of Events Closing Soon NEW YORK N Y March 17 Cross ¬ country sport should flourish in the East with stakes like those offered by the West chester Racing Association due to close Mon ¬ day March 26 as an incentive for owners to engage in this exhilarating pastime pastimeThese These events which are five in number include two of the richest plums of the year for steeplechasers in the old established Brook Handicap Steeplechase and the newer but none the less substantial Charles L Ap ¬ pleton Memorial Cup Steeplechase at two miles The former which will be run during the autumn meeting will carry an added value of 10000 and will be decided over the two and a half mile course The West chcster Racing Association will donate a sil ¬ ver cup to the owner of the winner The Brook is the chief steeplechase fixture of the aumtun and attracts crosscountry en ¬ thusiasts from all over the Union and the Dominion of Canada CanadaThe The Charles L Appleton Memorial Steeple ¬ chase which was named in honor of that good sportsman who did so much for the crosscountry sport will be decided during the spring meeting It will be the second running of this event which is fraught with sentiment as 5000 half the value of the race is donated by friends of Major Apple ton In doing so they pay a loving tribute to his memory and aid in promoting a fine test of the type of thoroughbred he loved so well The Westchester Racing Associa ¬ tion does its part by adding the other 5000 to make the prize worth 10000 10000A A noteworthy feature of the race is that men and women in every walk of life are among the contributors to the Appleton Memorial Fund The fine old Cup which is offered by the Greentree Stable with which Major Appleton was associated is a mag ¬ nificent trophy It is to be retained by the owner of the winner for a year A replica of this choice example of the silversmiths art of 150 years ago will be presented to the owner outrightOther of the winner to be kept outright Other events to be run during the spring meeting at Belmont Park are the Grand National Steeplechase Handicap 3500 add ¬ ed at about three miles the International Steeplechase Handicap 2000 addded at about two miles and a half All are for four yearolds and upward upwardSuch Such fixtures should faring out a better class of horses than in some years Many Aiorses now racing on the flat are of the type to go through the field where the rewards are most substantial
