LOUISIANA DERBY TO AMOLE New OrleansOwned Colt Ridden by Crescent City Jockey Cap ¬ tures Most Valuable Race of the Winter Meeting Calcutta Second and Setting Sun Third NEW ORLEANS La March 17 It was fitting that a locallyowned horse ridden by a local boy should account for the main race of the meeting and this came about this afternoon at the Jefferson Park track when Amole owned by the Southland Stable the nom do course of F C Letellier beat home a band of the best threeyearolds that could be mustered here to start in the 10000 added Louisiana Derby in its initial running Amole was ridden by the local jockey J D Mooney Following the winner four lengths in his rear was Calcutta with Setting Sun follow ¬ ing and Shamrock the favorite fourth The winners share of the money amounted to 91SO Calcuttas part amounted to 1500 Setting Suns portion was 800 and by fin ¬ ishing in fourth place Shamrock received 200 200The The winner was in front for the entire race He displayed ability to race easily in the difficult going of the day and Mooney took no chances riding him into a long lead in the first quarter He was pursued stead ¬ ily first by Body Guard and Blue Nose which alternated in second place and later by Setting Sun with Raffles and Chiva mak ¬ ing ineffectual rushes in the first half mile Shamrock with an outer position and slowly in motion had a difficult task in front of him and was not equal to the occasion though he began picking up his tired op ¬ ponents in the last quarter On the stretch turn a quarter from the finish it was pa ¬ tent that Amole would be the victor He was going comfortably at this stage with a good margin intervening between him and Setting Sun The latter was showing signs of tir ¬ ing and was in danger of succumbing to the steadygoing Calcutta for second place The trio finally placed dominated in the stretch Amole finished with bold strides and Cal ¬ cutta made a game effort to overhaul Set ¬ ting Sun This he accomplished in the last sixteenth sixteenthALL ALL THE IIIDEIIS WARXEI WARXEIPrior Prior to the running of the race the stew ¬ ards warned the riders against rough riding or attempted interference to any of the starters They made it plain that offenders would suffer severely and that the officials were ready to carry their jurisdiction beyond this meeting to punish rough riding or any other infraction of the rules in the race It j had a salutary effect for the race was de ¬ void of any crowding or semblance of inter ference to any of the starters The beaten ones were not good enough and on their showing this afternoon a majority of the owners with starters in the race might just as well forget their disappointments disappointmentsAll All attendance records for Jefferson Park were broken this afternoon when an im ¬ mense crowd that included for the occasion visitors from Memphis Louisville points in Louisiana and Texas witnessed the conclu ¬ sion of the racing season here chiefly at ¬ tracted to make it invigorating Track conditions however favored pro ¬ nounced mud runners and militated against those footingWhile which race better over solid footing While the Jefferson Park spring meeting fell a bit short of the expectations of the management still it measured fairly well to the standard of the racing that had gone before Financially it was successful and the great crowd attending the
