Here and There Thereon on the Turf New Orleans Racing Next Winter WinterHeavy Heavy Saratoga Nomina ¬ tions tionsMuch Much Richness in Pimlico Stakes to Close Already ambitious plans have besn an ¬ nounced for New Orleans racing of next winter The meeting in the fall at Jefferson Park is to open Thanksgiving Day November 28 and is to continue until the end of the year Then Jefferson Park makes way for the Fair Grounds meeting which continues from Janu ¬ ary 1 until March 4 This is followed by the second Jefferson Park meeting which will close as it did this year on March 17 17What What is of particular interest in the plans is that there will b3 fall and winter stakes as well as in the spring The success of the Loui ¬ siana Derby has induced the putting on of these other stakes The Derby itself may have an increased value over its 10000 of this year While the entries are not all in yet for the Saratoga stakes that were closed with secre ¬ tary A McL Earlocker Thursday it is as ¬ sured that the nominations will be extremely heavy They and the attractive list that was closed last November will keep the racing at Saratoga up to its usual high standard with the best from the East West and Canada coming together Saratoga is a rare play ¬ ground for the month of August and it will be up to its best traditions this year The next set of stakes to close are those of the Maryland Jockey Club These are fixtures that close April 10 and are to be decided at Pimlico the first two weeks in May Of course the 50000 Preakness Stakes is the big thing of the list It is to be run the last day ofj the meeting May 12 and will possibly offer a dependable line on the Kentucky Derby which is down for decision on May 19 19It It was in 1919 that Sir Barton won both the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby and this year the present intention of many train ¬ ers is to start the same candidate in each race It is a happy arrangement of the rich offer ¬ ings and any colt or filly that should be vic ¬ torious in each would have a wonderful start to finish out the year as the greatest money winner of 1923 and possibly the greatest win ¬ ner in turf history historyBesides Besides the Preakness Stakes there are ten other stakes to close They are particularly liberal offerings with one of 7500 added another of 10000 four of 55000 each three of 3000 and two of 2500 each All of the Pimlico stakes are added money races and the purse program that is being prepared for the meeting provides for no race of lesser value than 1300 added while many of them will be of S 1500 and 2000 2000The The present interest that is being taken in the Kentucky Derby will be manifested in the Preakness Stakes just as soon as the nomina ¬ tions to the race are made known knownThe The principal points of difference of the two big races are that the Preakness Stakes is at a mile and an eighth for entire colts and fillies with penalties and allowances while the Ken ¬ tucky Derby is a mile and a quarter at scale weight and geldings are eligible When the en ¬ tries in the Preakness Stakes are made public it will be found that the lists will be almost the same with the exception of the absence of geldings from the Preakness PreaknessIt It is possible that at the next meeting of the Jockey Club there will be offered a report on the Joseph E Davis selling race rule amend ¬ ment The committee that was appointed to report back to the governing body is composed of besides Mr Davis the author of the amend ¬ ment Francis R Hitchcock H K Knapp Joseph E Widener and A P Morris
