Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 28 1903 I Racing at Washington Oakland and Little Father Bill Dalys Illyria after being dis qualifisd last Wednesday came back today and showed that his victory in that race was not a fluke He met practically the same horses that he beat in that race He has improved each time out and his performance today was probably the best of his career He held close to the favorite Demurrer which set the pace for nearly half a mile always within striking distance and wore him down in the last eighth to win going away De ¬ murrers last race seems to have taken the edge off his speed and he did not display his usual alacrity in getting away from the post postThe The AnnheuserBusch Stakes was decided today at Little Rock with Nearest owned by J K Hughes the Avinner from Flaneur St Tammany and Lee Bruno St Tammany Avas the public choice but his weight anchored him and he tired when the final pinch came Fla ¬ neur made the pace with Nearest and St Tammany following in close order The three leaders raced in this position for threequar ¬ ters of the mile journey and when they turned for home Helgesen called on Nearest and the marc responded to his urging to Avin easily She outclassed her opponents at the weights having the feather of 98 pounds in the saddle At the finish Flaneur Avas a neck in advance of St Tammany TammanyJockey Jockey Redfern continues to star at the Benning track having another double win today The twoyearold colt Race King by Tenny Ordcrlette showed quite a lot of game ness in standing a long stretch drive to win the second race from Petunia and Judge This was Race Kings second start and also his second Aictory Redfern rode him and had much to do with his winning the race Pe ¬ tunia of which much was expected and which has been hailed as one of the best twoyear old fillies out this year was a big disappoint ¬ ment She was installed the faAorite over Race King but was badly outpaced during the early running but displayed a high flight of speed through the stretch and would have won in another fifty yards She will probably do better Avhen the distances are lengthened but is not the fill she has been claimed to be Judge which finished third was not far behind the other two coming with a rush into the homestretch and going around the others but the effort was too much for him and he tired in the final drive Only three quarters of a length separated the first three at the finish Electric the only other starter in the race and also making his initial at ¬ tempt unseated jockey Minder at the post causing a delay before the field Avas dispatched and then refused to in
