Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of April 26, 1903. Sunday— no racing. Edward Corrigan. the veteran turfman, suffered a hemorrhage the other day while at Churchill Downs watching his horses work out, and nearly bled to death. The blood flowed from his nose for six hours. He now lies in the Gait House so weak that he cannot talk above a whisper. He is in a serious condition, the doctors say, and another attack will prove fatal. Jockey Dominick had a wonderful week at Lakeside, winning on an average of two races a day and only failing on Saturday to get at least one winner. He had a mount in five of the six races on that day, but his nearest effort to landing a winner came in the fourth race, won by Bondage. He rode Omdurman in that race and the latter is not a mud runner. The track was sloppy at Lakeside on Saturday and Omdurman ran third, six lengths behind the winner, floundering badly throughout the race, and was exhausted at the finish. Although Potente ran sixth in yesterdays Queens County Handicap, won by Yellow Tail, the old gelding had every excuse in the world, and his showing in that race is not to be taken seriously in figuring his chances in the handicaps for the coming season. In the Queens County Handicap he was pock eted practically all the way and never did he have a clear course before him. He was giving weight to every horse in the race with the exception of Andy Williams. Yellow Tail was in with 108 pounds, two less than Potente. The latter ran impressively last Thursday, when he won the Flushing Handicap, beating such good ones a« Ethics. Torch light and Silurian. His margin of victory in that race one length could have been much gr?ater had jockey Fuller so elected. He ran i the mile and seventy yards in 1:47 Vi. hard 1 held, over a track not exceptionally good. . Potente made his first start this year at New Orleans in a mile dash for four vear olds and I i 1 . I over, allowances. The old fellow showed that he is not partial to mud when he met defeat, running third to Honolulu and John Peters. Back of him were Hanover Queen, Registrar and Major Mansir. In his next essay he again met defeat by the narrowest of margins, finishing a head behind Major Tenny in the overnight handicap at the Crescent City, but he was giving Major Tenny seventeen pounds, the pair running the mile in 1 :43% over a sticky track. Witfull then beat him by three lengths on January 12 over the same track in a mile and sixteenth race, but the filly only carried 88 pounds to Potentes 108. The old gelding finally found a track to his liking on March 11. and he won a dash of seven-eighths of a mile from a fair band, carrying the high weight and winning easily. Moving up the lin? to Memphis he ran third to Waswift and Scotch Plaid, finishing in front of Major Tenny. Wax Taper and Huzzah. Then on to Aqueduct and hitting his true form, he won the Rock-away Stakes from Never More, Embarrass-, ment. Duelist, Courtmaid and others, winning by three lengths going away after a poor start. Potente may not be the best handicap horse in training this year, but he is consistent and in all his races rarely does he fail to get some portion of the purse.
