CHANGED CONDITIONS Summerlike Weather at Latonia . Gives Way to Cooi Breezes. Bain and Slow Track Results in the Feature Eace Being Declared Off. LATONIA, Ky., Oct. 18. "With the declaring off of the feature race of the day the Latonia card was of the ordinary variety, with the fields made up mostly of the cheaper grade of horses. However, the sport was interesting:. There was a decided change in the weather, the warm, summerlike breezes which have prevailed here for the last week t giving away to rain and heavy wraps were ! much in evidence. Despite all this sudden change the crowd was up to the usual weekday attendance. A cheap band paraded for the opening race ! of the day which resulted in a victory for . the extreme outsider Ben Bolt, from the ! stable of Harned Bros. and Jones, over the . heavily backed Charles Henry, with Golden Floss in third place. , Away to a quick beginning, Stamp essayed ; to set the pace, but after a brief display of speed gave way when collared by Ben Bolt, . the latter dashing away into a big lead, which jhe easily maintained to the end to win in a canter. i Breakfast Bell, ridden by L. McDermott, . showed a decided improvement over her j recent form when she galloped home a winner in the easiest of fashions in the second j race. Waukulla was second, with May Loyd j coming from a long way back for the short end. The Bradley filly sprinted into a safe x i lead after the rise of the barrier and never ! left the result in doubt, drawing away to a four lengths lead at the end. The race j was marred when the Audley Farm Stables iMarkiluna got caught in a jam before reach- lng the half-mile pest and lost her rider. PARKES VIGOItOUS FINISH. Jockey I. Parke was loudly acclaimed when he snatched a well-earned victory in the .third race, getting his mount, Plus Ultra, up in the final strides to beat Escarpolette by a head. This proved a corking race. It was at one mile and an eighth, with Plus Ultra and Escarpolette dominating the running throughout. The latter set a fast pace, but when Plus Ultra challenged under Parkes j vigorous riding she surrendered, though it was not until the last few strides that the jLowe color bearer showed his head in front. T. M. Botts furnished the victor in the fourth race when his Black Toney gelding ; Colored Boy was home in front in a dash of j three-quarters. A. P. Foleys Trantula got .up in time for second place, with D. Lehans , Spats taking the short end of the purse from the favorite. Lord Allen, piloted by I. Parke. Lord Allen flattered his admirers, or rather the admirers of his rider, by leading to the , stretch, but despite the best efforts of Parke j failed to resist the closing rush of the three j placed horses, inches separating the second, ; third and fourth horses. ; Tony Beau, racing for W. H. Hall, was .the winner of the substituted race, the fifth .oh the days card, at a distanec of one mile and an eighth. Handel, from the barn of T. E. Mueller, got the second money, with J. H. Louchheims Blue Stone lasting for third place. Georgette was the favorite here but raced wide in the first turn and tired thereafter. Belgian Queen was the early pacemaker and after she gave way Blue Stone moved to the front, but her early .strenuous racing told and she proved no match for Tony Beau when the latter came j around the last turn to assume command and j go on to an easy victory. MADAM VE2CNTE QUITS. Two-year-old fillies made up the field in the sixth race and it marked the overthrow of the outstanding choice, Madam Vennie, which quit early. The winner turned up in Lady Jane, a length and a half separating her from Norseland, which had a similar margin over Ocirena. J. B. Respess Make Up was the favorite in the concluding dash of the afternoon, tdespite the presence of I. Parke on Hold Me. The latter set the early pace, but readily succumbed to the challenge of Make Up at the turn out of the backstretch, the latter easily holding sway the remainder of the way. s
