PAPYRUS STOCK GOES UP English Invader Gallops Mile and an Eighth in 1:51. Trial Demonstrates that Epsom Derby Winner Is Hot Only a Stayer, bnt a Remarkably Speedy Racer. NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct 18. Stephen Donoghue has galloped Papyrus and after he was through with a mile and an eighth work at Belmont Park Thursday morning there was general rejoicing in the British camp and among those who have pinned their faith on the Epsom Derby winner for the 5100,000 match with Harry F. Sinclairs Zev at Belmont Park Saturday. The son of Tracery galloped a mile and an eighth in 1:51 and it was an exhibition of speed altogether new to the dockers who have been following his preparation since the arrival of Basil Jarvis and the retinue that came with the challenger. Ted Banham had said on one occasion, after a slow gallop on Papyrus, that he did not even "cluck" to the colt, that being a jockey privilege and not one enjoyed by a stable lad. Whether or not Steve Donoghue "clucked" to Papyrus in this mile and an eighth trial makes little difference, for at the end of this fast move the handsome visitor was under restraint and could readily have run faster, though the move was not far behind the American record for the distance. It was also a work that should set at rest any apprehension about the ability of Papyrus to race over the "dirt" track. He galloped along so well all through the trial that he is sure to suffer no inconvenience Saturday. It is also agreed that while Zev has shown himself to be particularly at home in muddy going, such a track will also be to the liking of the English colt For the final work, with his jockey in the saddle, it was decided that Papyrus should be permitted to go along at almost a racing clip and Bar Gold was started about sixty yards in the lead with a light boy in the saddle. Donoghue demonstrated that the challenger is not a slow beginner when he ran the first eighth in 12. The next eighth was run in 11 to pass the quarter-post in 24. Another eighth in 11 brought him to the three-eighth post in 36 seconds. Then he ran two different furlongs in 12 seconds each, reaching the half in 48 and the five-eighths in 1:00. The next was a furlong in 12, making his three-quarters in 1:12. There was" a slight slowing up when he took 13 seconds for his seventh furlong, reaching that mark in 1:25. The next was in 13 when he rounded out his mile in 1:38. The last eighth was run in 13 seconds, finishing out the mile and an eighth in 1:51. When Bar Gold was through, Basil Jarvis, on a fast pony galloped in front of Papyrus to keep him at it in the final quarter. All through the move Donoghue had not taxed the challenger. to the limit and it was a trial that demonstrated that he is equipped with plenty of speed as well as being a rare stayer. The remarkable move of the invader was a general topic of discussion at the Yonkers track all afternoon and there was a veritable stampede of the followers of Zev until it is assured now that the challenger will be the popular choice as far as the Wagering is concerned when they go to the post Saturday.
