BRACADALE A VICTOR Easily First in the Hartsdale Stakes at Empire City. Paula Shay Gives Weight and an Easy Beating to Her Opponents at a Mile. YONKERS, N. Y., Oct. 18. Bracadale, from the Rancocas Stable, was winner of the stake race offering at the Empire City track today when he took the Hartsdale Stakes over the short three-quarters course in the fast time of 1:08, thereby adding just ?4,415 to his winning score. H. P. Whitneys Swing-along raced to second place and James Butlers Sting was third in front of Bonaparte and Courser. There was a chill in the air and occasional drizzles of rain made the day anything but comfortable for the big crowd that was out, but the racing was entertaining and there was the usual Yonkers enthusiasm. The start was a good one in the Hartsdale Stakes and Swingalong was rushed into the lead by Carroll, while Laverne Fator saved Bracadale back of him, but well within striking distance. Sting was outrunning Bonaparte and Courser brought up the rear. This order was maintained until nearing the stretch, where Fator shook up Bracadale and he went up to Swingalong. There was not much fight left in the Whitney gelding and Bracadel raced on by to win with speed in plenty to spare, while Swingalong had no trouble in beating Sting for second place. Four fairly speedy three-year-old fillies met in the mile dash of the third race and James S. Farrinas Paula Shay, under a well-timed ride by Earl Sande, was an easy winner from James MacManus Jacqueline Julian, with Miss Cerina saving third place from Driftwood. MISS CERENA IN BAD FORM. Miss Cerina made the early pace and Sande was content to save Paula Shay behind her and made no attempt to go to the pacemaker until leaving the backstretch. There he moved up slightly and on the turn for home he was alongside her. It was not long before he had gone into command at the end. Paula Shay was an easy winner. Jacqueline Julian was a follower through the early racing, but after passing the half-mile ground Stutts sent her up on the outside and for an instant she closed up in a threatening manner. She came again in the stretch to take second place, while Miss Cerina tired badly and seems in bad form. Driftwood was at no time a contender. The opening race was a mile selling dash and Clarence Buxtons Coeur de Lion proved easily best when after following the early leader he slipped through on the inside while coming to the stretch turn and raced into a long lead in the last eighth. There was a pretty fight between J. C. McKays Mela-chrino and S. Goochs Flying Devil and they finished in that order. John E. Maddens Water Girl was best of the platers in the mile and seventy yards of the fifth race and won easily, while Warlike, by a great rush through the stretch, got up to nip out Bessie Leighton for second place. Water Girl was saved close to the leader until nearing the stretch, where she rushed into the lead and the race was over. Oran, after being right in the contention to the last eighth, tired and then came Warlike with the rush that caught Shillick napping on Bessie Leighton.
