Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Oct. 24, 1903 Racing at Brighton Beach, Latonia, Worth and St. Louis. i Latonias opening day saw Dick Welles in action in the first race, an allowance affair at three-quarters of a mile. Only two others started against the King Eric colt and he outclassed them badly, winning under a strong pull by six lengths. He was never extended. The Fort Dearborn Handicap, for all ages, at one mile, with ,500 added, was the feature attraction at Worth. Nine went to the post, with Toah a post-time favorite, but he ran a disappointing race, finishing fourth. The race was marred somewhat by a poor start, Dr. Stephens and Potheen getting much the worst of it. Haviland and Toah got away flying, gaining a big advantage on the rest, "the former taking the" lead and remaining in front until the final eighth, where he fell away beaten and Toah took command. The latter appeared the winner, but tired fast. Here Colonial Girl came, fast and, finishing resolutely under vigorous urging, won by a neck from Witfull, which finished one length before I Know for second place. Witfull -was badly pocketed when turning into the stretch and did not get clear until the last sixteenth. She then came fast and was wearing the winner down rapidly in the closing strides.
