J I 1 1 2 I i i 1 - s - - n a ; y I il to o h: h I g! i- hi DIOGENES FOR THE DERBY Winner of the Hopeful Stakes Will Be Pointed I for the Famous Kentucky Race. NEW YORK, N. Y., Jan. 18. Tl. A. Smith, , trainer of Walter M. Jeffords stable, arrived in New York early in the week, having come ; : up from Berlin, Md., where the horses are ; wintering. Today, with Mrs. Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Max Hirsch, he left for Hot Springs, Ark., for a vacation before his duties call him back to his charges. It was "Bob" Smith that developed Di- ogenes, winner of the Hopeful of last year, and he has hopes of the son of Ballot and Smoky Lamp being a Kentucky Derby contender this year. He said that all of the horses had done exceedingly well and that Diogenes had im-e proved greatly in appearance since being thrown out of training. The winter before this colt showed scant improvement through the winter and the way he has grown and filled out is particularly gratifying. While it is too early yet to make Derby predictions Smith, said that he knew his colt could run fast and that he was in the best of health, That is about all that can be expected at this time.
