NOTABLE ARRAY OF HORSES Interesting to See So Many Stars Named for the Big Handicaps of This Years Racing. NEW YORK, N. Y., Jan. 20. It is interesting to note the number of good horses that are named for the big handicaps that have closed to date. The presence in the Suburban of Grey Lag, Zev, Mad Hatter, Prince James, My Play, Martingale, Dunlin, Messenger, How Fair, Sting, Sun Flag, Cherry Pie, Exodus, Enchantment, Vigil, My Own, Mad Play, Diogenes, Bud Lerner, Ordinance, Sarazen, Stanwix, Thunderclap, Wise Counsellor, Big Blaze, Flagstaff, Nassau, Rialto, Transmute. Husky, Beau Butler and others augurs well for the quality of sport that the big handicaps will afford. While Grey Lag is a host in himself, there are other distinguished cripples that look like scoring a comeback. Bud Lerner, My Play and Messenger will be welcome. Nobody but Sam Hildreth knows how good a race horse Bud Lerner is when at his best. It was a hard blow for the Rancocas Stable when the bay colt went wrong at the very outset of last seasons campaign. My Play was just rounding to his true form when he spread his foot. Jim McCIellan has always maintained that this brother to Man o AVar would have won the Kentucky Derby in Morvichs year but for this same trouble and the handsome colt was proving himself a campaigner of no ordinary calibre last autumn when the old ailment manifested itself again. Messenger has been kept going all winter and is sounder today than at any time since he bruised a tendon in the race for the Grab Bag Handicap of 1922. He was always a beautiful horse but has thickened and developed this winter until he fills the eye of tho connoisseur.
