I : ; j I j I . j I . , 1 , j IMPROVEMENTS AT DOWNS Col. Matt Winn Arranging for Early Completion of Changes at Louisville Course. LOUISVILLE, Ky., Jan. 20. Col. M. J. Winn, general manager of the Kentucky Jockey Club, is at Churchill Downs superin-j tending the improvements now going on at that famous course. He has been consulting Architect I. X. Murphy and Superintendent Tom Young for the past few days concerning the new paddock addition to the clubhouse, increased seating facilities and rebuilding of the new barns recently destroyed by fire. Work on the new paddock buildings and changing the old paddock into a restaurant has advanced some and with the return of good weather this work will be rushed to completion. It is expected that the addition of a second story to the clubhouse pagola will increase the seating capacity at the Downs 4,000. Mr. Winn while in New York made arrangements with Pierre Wertheimer of Paris, owner of Epinard, tne French thoroughbred champion, and Major August Belmont of the New York Jockey Club to have Epinard con-: test at Latonia during October in a race at one mile and a quarter against all the best racers in America. It is understood that the race at Latonia is to be for three-year-olds and. over, weight for age, with an added value of 0,000. Mr. Winn, it is said, is. opposed to a match race. However, the con- j ditions for the race in which Epinard will take part will be so drawn that only the best thoroughbreds in America will be enabled to enter. What these conditions will be have not been fully determined. Mr. Winn will remain over at the Downs as the guest of Col. Andrew Vennie, resident j manager, until after Monday, when a meet-i j ing of the stockholders of the Kentucky j Jockey Club will be held. j "While the date for closing of the nomina-: lions for the Kentucky Derby has not Lean announced it probably will be about February 15, the same as last year, and the official announcement of the nominations will come about February 23.
