I Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Jan. 21, 1904 Racing at New Orleans, Los Angeles and Oakland. Alex Shields has determined to have another try at training the good old campaigner Advance Guard. With a hope of bringing him back to the post this year the -good son of Great Tom Nellie Van has been liberally entered with the other horses of the E. R. Thomas string. Several years ago John E. Madden pulled off on2 of the biggest racing coups of the year by winning the Kentucky Derby with Plaudit. Lieber Karl came up from Tennessee with a big reputation and was at odds-on in the betting when the horses went to the post, but Plaudit won the Kentucky classic by half a length at ths odds of 4 to 1. Experienced Lcrsemen concluded that the result of this race was a fluke, and regardless of Plaudits victory the bookmakers laid odds of 4 to 1 against the Madden colt in the Clark Stakes, while Lieber Karl was again held at odds-on. 4-
