OUR LEADING BROODMARES Miss Kearney, Dam of Zev, Tops the List for 1923. Enchantress IT., Bobolink II., Martial Note and Hcttlc I.andon Next In the Order Earned. The honors that Zev brought to his sire, The Finn, because of his marvelous success in the racing of 1923, likewise belong to his dam. Miss Kearney, she a daughter of Planu-des. The Finn led the sires of 1923 and Miss Kearney holds the same exalted position among the brood mares. Five sons and daughters of Miss Kearney won a total of twenty-one races and 81,311 in stakes and purses, of which Zev contributed 72,008. Enchantress II., through the prowess of In Mcmoriam, is second on the brood mare list, with 0,712 won by her offspring, Rep being her other winning representative. Bobolink II. is a close third, the brilliant two-year-old, St. James, being responsible for her high standing. Chacolet alone placed her dam, Martial Note, in the front ranks of our brood mares, the Headley mares nine victories and 3,970 giving her dam fourth place. Bettie Liandon had two smashing racers in the campaign of 1923 in My Own and My Dear, both of which figured importantly in the results of the year. This pair and Kcw-ple ONeill won sixteen races and ,835, thereby placing their dam fifth on the list. Santa Anna IT. had Beau Butler as her chief winner in the racing of last year, while Hustles best was Wise Counsellor, the acknowledged "Western two-year-old champion. Then there are Vignola, with Vigil, Dona Iloca with Dunlin. Smoky Lamp with Diogenes, Matinee witli Rialto, The Scold with Rebuke, Rush Box with Sarazen, followed by Bold Girl and Hour Hand, each with four representatives, of which Firm Friend and Audacious did yeoman service for Bold Girl, while Hackamore and How Fair were the chief contributors for Hour Hand. There is a wealth of the. best American and English blood represented in the dams that top the brood mare list of 1923. Miss Kearney, the leader, is, of course, American, then follow in the order named Enchantress II., Bobolink II., Martial Note, all of English extraction. While the American predominates there are many English mares in the list, as our breeders have been importing for some years past desirable young matrons for mating with our sturdy American sires, the success of which venture may be gleaned from the following tabulation disclosing the leading brood mares of 1923 in respect to the winnings of their offspring in the racing of last year: Miss Kearney, by Planudes.
