GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY Fiftieth Running of the Kentucky Derby This Year. Gold Trophy to the Winner Gold Spurs to Jockey and Gold Split-Second Watch to Trainer. - The Golden Anniversary of the Kentucky Derby. When that famous race is decided next May it will mark the fiftieth running oC what is now one of the mast coveted and valuable stakes of the American turf. The Kentucky Derby began in a modest way in 1875 and when Aristides was its first winner it was only worth the insignificant sum of ,850, while in 1922 and 1923 the net values had reached the imposing figures oC 3,775 and 3,600, respectively. The history of this glorious American race is replete with sparkling deeds of noble horses and touch of a romance here and there suck illustrious horses as Aristides, Baden Baden, Hindoo, Spokane, Riley, Ben Brush, Lieutenant Gibson, Allan-a-Dale, Old Rosebud. Regret, Omar Khayyam, Exterminator and Zev are included among its winners. For the golden anniversary of this noted race general manager Matt J. Winn and his associates are planning great things. First oC all they are enlarging the seating capacity and providing more accommodations at Churchill Downs for the tremendous crowd that is certain to go to Louisville to see the Derby decided on that eventful day in May. In announcing the spring stakes to be run at Churchill Downs and Latonia Colonel Winn calls attention to additional prizes for thin years anniversary Derby. The race has 0,000 added and the winner will receive in addition to his share of the stake a gold tiophy, the winning jockey will be presented with gold spurs and a gold split-second watcli goes to the trainer of the successful horse. The stake program for the Churchill Downs spring meeting includes besides tho Derby, the Kentucky Oaks, Clark Handicap and Grainger Memorial Handicap, each with 0,000 added, also the Debutante and Bash-ford Manor Stakes, each with ,000 added. The Latonia program comprises the Latonia Derby, 5,000 added ; the Latonia Oaks. 0,000 added; the Independence Handicap, 0,000 added, and the Inaugural Handicap, Clipsetta Stakes, Harold Stakes, Quickstep Handicap, Enquirer Handicap, Cincinnati Trophy, each with ,000 added. Altogether a total of 75,000 in added, money is provided for these stake features, entries for which close February 23.
