ENGLISH SPORTSMAN DEAD Edward Lawson, Who Sold Horse That Won Grand National for ,500, Succumbs. Edward Lawson. a retired farmer and formerly a prominent sportsman, died recently in England at the age of 05. He once owned Old Joe, bred by the late E. IT. Banks of llighmoor, Wington, which, in the ownership of the late Johnstone Douglas of Comlongan Castle, won tho Grand National Steeplechase in 1SS0. Old Joe was sold as a yearling for 75, but, under Mr. Lawsons tutelage, blossomed into a fencer of unusual merit, winning seven races out of nine. Once Mr. Lawson rode him seven miles- straight across country, without touching a road, except when crossing it. Johnstone Douglas gave ,500 for the horse, and was said to have won 0,000 by his Grand National success.
