Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 14, 1904 Racing at New Orleans, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Hot Springs. Tommy Foster, which created a sensation at Bcnning last spring by winning with odds of 200 to 1 against him, has small chance to duplicate the performance this spring. A letter received from New Orleans has announced that recently the five-year-old son of Fonso Recess had broken down in his work. Tommy Foster never was a brilliant performer, but this one stunt at 200 to 1 makes him remembered. The 1903-4 winter meeting of the Crescent City Jockey Club was productive of the generous total of 18,324 to winning owners, of which 8,876 was run for in 1903 and 19-44S in 1904. The daily average for the ninety-three days of racing was ,422. S. W. Street and Co. headed the list of winning owners, and as evidence of the wide distribution of mony won it may be pointed out that this firm only won 6,060, while ninety-two owners are credited with winnings of ,000 or over. Outside of S. W. Street. and Co., C. R. Ellison with 1,456 and S. C. Hildreth with 1,317 were lha only owners lucky enough to garner 0,000 or more. Of the horses that raced at this track, the promisig colt Ostrich established firmly in the lead in amount of money won when he captured the Crescent City Derby last Saturday. By dint of an industrious and consistent career, Big Ben landed second to him, while the improved Captain Arnold, the veteran sprinter Scorpio, the useful horse Tribes Hill, Sam Hildreths crack fill, Witfull, and the sturdy performer Little Scout were pretty well bunched, each having won more than ,000 and less than ,000.
