SPOT CASH BY A NOSE • . Defeats Flint Stone and New Hampshire in Philadelphia ♦ Aero Handicap a Thriller With Lord Granite Victor Over Senator Norris. ♦ HAVRE DK GRACE, Md.. April 19.— A. O. Bostwicks Spot Cash, the four-year-old son of Broomstick and Payment, was -winner of the mile and a sixteenth of the Philadelphia Handicap at Havre de Grace this afternoon. in one of the best finishes in the history of that stake. Just a nose back of him came J. McMillens Flint Stone, winner of the Harford Handicap, and but a neck farther away was J. K. I... Ross New Hampshire, showing the way to H. P. Whitneys Gonfalon. Hack of these came old Exterminator and Knobbie. The race was worth ,350 to the winner. There was a break in the weather, but it was still chilly and the track was in bad condition, being deep on the inner rail, while it was comparatively firm on the outside. This condition played an important part in the decision of both the Aero Handicap and the Philadelphia, for on each occasion the pacemaker tired in the deep going and the winner scored on the extreme outside. The crowd was an immense one and the sport first class, accounting for no end of enthusiasm. In the Philadelphia Handicap Knobbie was first to cut out the pace. There was just a bit of crowding on the first turn and Spot Cash and Exterminator bumped, the old gelding being carried a bit wide. Through * the backstretch New Hampshire went after I Knobbie. while there was some closing up 1 back of the pair of them, with Spot Gash and Exterminator bringing up the rear. This order was not hanged to any material extent heading for the stretch, except that both Spot «asi and Flint Stone were beginning to run on the outside. JO KliY WALLS MISTAKE. New Hampshire was well clear and going easily as he headed for home, but P. Walls, who had the mount, made the fatal mistake of steering a course along the inside. He was still dear inside the last eighth, but tired in the going and then along dashed Spot Cfcah and Flint Stone, closely lapped, and on the outside to beat him home. The Aero Handicap proved a thriller with i tile lightly weighted Lord Granite winning liy a head from Senator Norris. Another half I length crowded Swingalong back to third ; position. Wallace deserves much credit for J the victory of .1. Schanks four-year-old, Lord Granite. He rated his mount off the killing early pace, came to the best going I along the .titer fence for his drive and displayed gallant finishing ability in making Lord Granite outlast Senator Norris. The start was a good one and Shuffle Along and Swingalong at once went into command. Swingalong was inside the Hostwick four-j ear-old and Stevens was so intent in keeping him down on the inside that he swung Shuffle Along over and saw to it that he could not come clear. McAtee made two or three moves to try and escape the deep going, but Stevens continued to hold him there and when th.- stretch was leached he still had the son of Whisk Hroom II. well bottled up on the Inside. The pair of them battled along and Swing-along gradually wore Shuffle Along down, hut in the meantime Lord Granite and Senator Norris had both made a wide turn into the Btiaight and finishing in the firm going headed both, ijord Granite beating Senator Nor-Jis a head, while the Senator in turn was a length before Swingalong, with Shuffle Along a head further back. HIT OF STRATEGY. Stevens committed no foul in keeping FwingaloriK in the deep going, but it was an iritentional bit r.f trickery and his ride beat the Whitney starter, but at the same time brought defeat to Shuffle Along. Yankee Princess in the third atoned to the followers of the OooAea fortunes for the failure of Oloudland in the opener. She triumphed by a neck from Sarko. the favorite, at the end of the Combat Handicap. Huon Pine W9M beaten by a nose for second place, W. Marriner. an apprentice, displayed fine horsemanship in winning the sixth with Lord Wrack, despite the fact that he was on the best horse. i:u|ne finished second to the old son of Wrack. Supcrbum was third. Marriner heat his playmates away in a race at a mile and a quarter. He went to the turn in front. He waited in front until Wessie H. came along with a half mile yet to run. He laced with her awhile and then Continued on twelfth pace. SPOT CASH BY A NOSE Continued from first page. drew away. It was smart handling from a promising boy. Victory for Bernice Harrar came as somewhat of a surprise in the opener although she won her last start over the Bowie course by six lengths. It was believed that she was outclassed today. Gymkhana and Cloudland were lapped on the Superman lilly at the end. lymkhana, one of the best of the juveniles developed at Havana, made the pace with Cloudland forcing it. Bother was closest to the pair early. Morris brought i.ernice Harrar around them on the turn and drew into a lead of a half length at the end of four and a half furlongs, the longest dash of the juveniles to date since the opening of Maryland racing. Bernice Harrar is the property of Clyde K. Bryson. Fractious horses delayeel the start of the second race for nine minutes. It was a dash at a mile and seventy yards that took the place of the abandoned jumping race. The field was in no condition for the steeplechasers. Aggravating Iapa got home tirst In a hard drive. S. Williams recovered with the son of Flittergold from early interference, came to the outside of the leaders on th.-final turn and won by a narrow margin. Aladdin under perfect riding from Coltiletti made his move around the turn, but lacked stamina to win. Johnny Dundee finished third.
