Defeats Hephaistos in the Running of Montana Handicap. ♦ ■ Sun Audience Establishes New Record for Five and a Half Furlongs at Jamaica. • NEW YORK, N. T., May 16— Small fields predominated at Jamaica today and the Montana Handicap, at a mile and sixteenth, was offered as the outstanding attraction. Scratches reduced the field to three starters? and in the running an upset was furnished when F. S. P. Randolph s Kins Albert, ridden by jockey T. OHara, was winner by a scant margin from F. E. Browns Hephaistos, while Mrs. J. A. Coburns Knobbie brought up the rear. The trio left the barrier In good alignment, following no delay, and Knobble was the first to show in front. He was quickly joined by King Albert and the pair drew away Into a brief lead from Hephaistos. The latter was closer up than in his previous starts. When well settled on the backstretch Knobbie and King Albert were still racing hearts apart, but the son of Wrack did not relish the pace and began to show signs of distress. Leaving the five-furlong post OHara sent the Randolph color bearer into an easy lead. Burns, astride Hephaistos, began his move and his mcunt responded with good courage, while Knobbie, showing the results of the early pace, dropped back. Rounding the Stretch turn King Albert maintained his advantage, while Hephaistos. under pressure, was gradually wearing him down. Through the final sixteenth the son of Vulcain finished rapidly, but just failed to get up. King Albert was a neglected factor in the wager.ng. while Hephaistos was accorded stout support. The distance was run in 1:44%, a creditable performance. THREATENING WEATHER. Cloudy, threatening conditions prevailed for yesterdays program, but the crowd that journeyed to the course was of good proportions. The track was fast and on the whole interesting racing and close finishes were enjoyed. Bee Rosenbergs Sun Audience was winner of the fifth race, which was at five and a half furlongs, and established a new track; record fcr the distance, clipping i i .• -fifth of a second from the old record e.f l:u... To win he was ridden out to shake c f f K. 1" Brown s Aragon, while Bonaparte, one e f t!ie Riviera Stable, was third. There was no delay at the post and the field left in goe d alignment. Sun Audience was quick to find his stride and went to the front with a rush. Aragon went after him, while Bonaparte was third. The World, which raced coupled with Bonaparte, met with early interference and Turner was forced to take up. Sun Audience hugged the inside rounding tl.e stretch turn, while Aragon was forced to come to the outside. An eighth from home it appeared as if the Brown starter would wear down the pacemaker, but he flattened out at the critical point. Bonaparte ran an even race throughout, but could not get to the leaders. J. S. Wards Theo. Fay and James Butlers White Wash staged a stirring finish in the running of the opening race, which was at five-eighths, under claiming conditions, and the former was winner by *a scant margin, while the odds-on choice. Clear View, from the R. T. Wilson stable, was a distant third and at no stage seriously threatened the leader. The start was a good one and Thee . Fay and White Wash were the quickest to begin. The pair raced as a team around the turn, while Clear View was in third position leading Young April and Uttle Pal. Clear View failed to improve his position when put under punishment. Entering the stretch White Wash poked his head in front, but Theo. Fay had the advantage of being fin the inner rail. Through the final eighth the Ward starter held on with splendid courage and right at the end outgamed White Wajsh. FRIGATE HOME FIRST. The Woodside. at a mile and seventy yards, resulted in a victory for H. M. Howards Frigate in a drive from the Somerset Stable s Bar Gold, while G. Konigswalds Comic Song was third ahead of his stable companion, Fifty-Fifty. Had it cot been for jo.-kev Thurbers timidity on Bar QcH there might have be n a different tale teld at the end. From the eighth post to the sixteenth Bar Gold, after slipping through on the inside, closed with a rush and was wearing Frigate down. Callahan realized tbe danger and went to the whip when Thurber took up. Frigate then drew clear again at the end. Bar Gold had a safe margin over the tiring Comic Song, which raced closest in pursuit of the pace throughout. G. D. Wideners Radiancy, ridden by jockey J. McTaggart. was winner of the closing dash of the afternoon, which was for maidens, in a hard drive from Mrs. G. W. Lofts Tiday, while the Oak Ridge Stables Repartee was third. The winner stole away into an easy lead the first part, but was doing her best to stall off Tiday at the end. Repartee ran an even race throughout.
