HAWTHORNES FIRST STAKE Weights Announced -in Iiidepend-ence Handicap to Be Run at Cicero Track Next Friday. Weights for the Independence Handicap, to be run at Hawthorne July 4, were announced by Clint C. Riley, official handicap-per, who assigned Carl Weidemanns In Memoriam the post honor in the big race. He will shoulder top weight, 128 pounds, but whether he will start in the Independence Handicap at Latonia or Hawthorne is a matter for conjecture at this time. Fifty-three were nominated in the Independence Handicap. The weights range from In Memoriams 128 pounds to Black Ruler and Attilia the minimum weight, 90 pounds. "Weight broke a wagon down" is an old adage. Hence it is interesting to compare the handicappers assignment of weights, the object of which is to bring the horses together, in other words, make a contest of it Little Celt and Better Luck, from the International Stable of Herbert Schimp, as has been predicted, are among the honored ones. Little Celt has been assigned 122 pounds and the stable companion, Better Luck, 120. Trainer George Walker planned to run both the International entries Friday, and with Carl Weidemanns In Memoriam out of the way, Chicago-owned horses may have the honor of carrying off the first stake. Revenge gets in with 112 pounds, while Willis Sharpe Kilmers "iron horse" Exterminator has also been asked to pack 112 pounds. The Greentree Stables entry, Exodus and Moonraker, have been assigned 112 and 110 pounds, respectively. There are several good performers listed among the lightweights, among them Lady Astor, Sarko, H. G. Bedwells Derby candidate.
