HAWTHORNE AT BEST Edgewater Beach Hotel Day Brings Out North Side Society. Feature Race to Rock Heather Sanola Again in the Limelight. - HAWTHORNE RACE TRACK, Aug. 30. Edgewater Beach Hotel day marked a red letter period in Hawthorne racing. It brought to the course in addition to a record attendance the elite of North Side Society, who came to make the occasion a gala one. The famous hostelry pressed into service most of its ornate motor coaches to convey the more than 300 guests that comprised the Edge-water Beach Hotel party. It included many notable persons of Chicagos judiciary, financiers, social leaders, and great merchants. It was the nearest reminder of Washington i Parks past glory s and the keen enjoyment " that the visitors derived from the occasion is certain to redound with great benefit to the sport. The Edgewater Beach Hotel Handicap at one mile with its endowment of ,500 added by the association had an additional inducement in the shape of an ornate and costly trophy, the gift of the Edgewater Beach Hotel management. It went to the winner, while the trainer and jockey were also substantially remembered with suitable and substantial gifts from the same source. The race brought to the post eight of the best handicap horses in these parts and it furnished a spectacular contest as well as a close finish, the winner turning up in J. W. Marchbanks lightly weighted Rock Heather, which beat home Alleden by a short margin and Prince Tii Tii just succeeding in getting up in the last stride to overhaul Pegasus the favored one. WINNER FAR BACK. The early running found the winner far in the wake of the others but the diminutive Griffin succeeded in getting him roused after half of the journey had been completed and the colt came with a great rush to circle around the others and begin a strenuous battle with the leaders. He held on grimly in the stretch drive and in the last seventy yards drew away from Alleden. Prince Tii Tii coming steadily nipped Pegasus for third place. Pegasus raced forwardly but began tiring in the last sixteenth. The mile was covered in 1 :38. It marked a creditable performance from a time standpoint The secondary feature, the Connery Handicap at three-quarters, brought to the post the cream in the sprinting division here and it .enabled the consistent Sanola to add another victory to her long list scored here. She raced this afternoon in the colors of her new owner, J. Hedderman, who parted with 0,000 yesterday for. her and more than won out the purchase price by her victory. Unlike in her former starts in which she came from behind, she took the lead immediately after the start and showed the way for the entire distance, but she was forced to her utmost to keep in advance of Surf Rider, which was pressing her hard and was only heaten by a short neck. The Araucanian finished third slightly in advance of Better Luck. It marked the first start for the latter in some time, but he has been working in great style.- . OH SUSANNA THITTMrilS. Some crack youngsters met in the second race, including Oh Susanna and Son of John. It was the first time that the latter had started here, but his splendid trials was known to most. He enjoyed favoritism and the support for him was extensive. He showed greenness throughout and Oh Susanna, going into a good lead, beat him home handily. The fifth race brought to the post a band of good sprinters and it furnished a victory for R. Li. Bakers Ponjola, which beat out Coyne after a hard drive, with Kerry Girl in third place. The opening race fell to the favorite Royal Duck, which after trailing the others far out of it for six furlongs, came on in the stretch to win as his rider pleased over : Slanderer. Slender which in turn beat Devil Girl. , Ponjola was claimed for ,000 in the fifth race by A. E. Barrett, represented in the race jby Body Guard. The latter pulled up in a bad i way. J Herman P. Conkling, one of the Hawthorne I stewards, left Saturday night for Timonium, j Md., where he will act as steward at that ! meeting. Edward Wolter, first assistant to J starter James Milton, also left Saturday j night for Timonium. He will act as starter I at that meeting until the arrival Wednesday of starter Milton.
