ANOTHER FOR J. K. L ROSS For Third Day in Succession His Colors F.irst in Woodbine Stake. 1 Vrana Wins staple Leaf States at Shortest Odds of Year Golden Splicro Returns From Stud to "Win. TORONTO, Ont. Sept 26. For the third day in succession. Commander J. K. L. Ross, of Montreal, won the feature at the Woodbine Park. Today it was the Maple Leaf Stakes, ,000 added, at a mile and a sixteenth, for Canadian-bred fillies. -Vrana, the Canadian Derby winner of the current year, carried the Ross silks to victory in the Maple Leaf. She was merely cantering over the eight and and half furlongs and won pulling up by six lengths with Catamaran in second position at the end after having followed the others for nearly half a mile. Smooth Ice, on of the Mrs. L. A. Livingston entry, took third money. Chiquita and Flaming Wire also ran. That Vrana would win was a foregone conclusion. Following her excellent performance in the Canadian Derby at Fort Erie in July the three-year-old daughter of Marathon-Priscilla Mullens was not herself but she showed in a recent start at Montreal that she had gotten back to her best form and with this knowledge there could be no defeat for her in todays feature. For that reason she paid only five cents on a ?2 investment, the shortest price of the cummer on the circuit. There were about 9,000 persons en hand for the racing this afternoon. The day from the viewpoint of temperature was the most pleasant of the meeting. The track was fast and enthusiasm ran high, presaging a record crowd for the excellent offering of Saturday. PROCYON BEATEN BY HEAD. The Lexington Plate filled in fifth position on the program and provided the opportunity for the successful comeback of Golden Sphere, the six-year-old son of Oliver Goldsmith Sphere of Influence, which has been doing stud duty for the Seagrams at Waterloo, Ont Procyon was beaten by a head by the English-bred horse. Long Point was third at the end of the mile and seventy yards. Golden Sphere carried top weight of 113 pounds and ran an excellent race under T. Wilson. He began slowly while Raffles and Procyon were showing the way. Royal Oak and Lieutenant Farrell also were in front of the winner at the half but he began to run from there on. Coming to the stretch he was second. Wilson guided a course outside of Procyon and wore him down in the final strides. Long Point was the disappointment of the race. He began slowly but was running fast at the end after saving much ground on the turn. . Blossoms, in the silks of the Thorncliffe Stable, with R. Fisher, in the saddle, won the Lincoln Plate, the daily contest for Canadian breds. Maternal Pride, winner of the Kings Plate last May, finished second showing good form for the first time since that contest Rex Gaiety finished third in a field of ten.
