ZEV AS A SPRINTER Shows Brilliant Speed of Old to Score Impressively. Early Arrivals for International , Swell Fridays Attendance at Latonia. LATONIA, Ky., Oct. 10. The one-time great Zev, which last year came here cham-pion of the three-year-old brigade to race , in the Latonia Special and met with a sharp : reverse by a doughty foeman in the shape i of In Memoriam, came back to the scene of ; , his defeat and scored an impressive victory -over the fastest sprinters that could be must- : ered to race the three-quarters with him. It ; J was the first time that Zev had been assigned I the light burden of 108 pounds. The condi-I tions of the race were such that it enabled - him. to receive considerable weight concessions.- , Opinion was stedfast that he would romp ; away-with the purse, but it proved the contrary, for, though Zev won and ran fast, his triumpli-was a hard earned one and he had to be ridden out to get the decision. - He displayed his old-time brilliant speed, but he was sorely pressed in the early stages to "dispose of Columbia, which held to him gamely for the first half mile. Columbia was done at. that- stage, but Right On Time took up the running where Columbia left off and when he tired and it looked as if Zev would go to an easy victory, Snooksie Bradley loomed up with her challenge. She fought valiantly, but Zev, roused hard, continued in front and near the end managed to draw into a short lengths lead. The three-quarters was run in 1:11. Latonia took on a holiday aspect this afternoon by the arrival of numerous special trains from various nearby " cities, including Chicago,, with racing enthusiasts to witness the third International Special race, to be decided tomorrow. The weather was perfect for racing and it contributed considerably to the enjoyment of the big crowd. Several of the finishes were again of the close variety and it required the judges verdict to determine the winner. FLOWERS OF LOVE EASILY. The Crystal Springs Purse at one mile, which shared with the fifth race as feature on the card resulted in an easy victory for the speedy Flowers of Love, carrying the colors of J. O. and G.HKeene. i The filly was an outstanding favorite and she never gave her supporters much concern for she kept pace with Rock Heather in the early stages and moved into the lead when called on before reaching the stretch and won well under restraint The veteran United Verde made a determined challenge at one stage of the stretch run, but he begain tiring right at the end, enabling Rock Heather to regain second place. Cannon Shot raced well and was a strong contender until the middle of the stretch. Col.Labold might have been a considerable .factor if he had -been ridden competently.--.His rider took him up sharply after the start and had him all over the 1 track. i The backers of favorites begain inauspi-ciously when Easter Bells and Suave Prince, the two staunchest backed ones in the opener, failed to even get a part of the purse. Spats ; beginning fast and showing fine speed led for the entire way with Belle of Elizabeth-town pressing him closest at the finish. Coyne, which had gotten away slowly and following far back for the first three-eighths, suddenly found his legs in the stretch and came with a great rush to head Sandalwood for third place. Suave Prince was close up in the early running before tiring, but Easter Bells was never seriously formidable. DISREGARD FOUL CLAIM. P. T. Chinns Baalbec was the victor in the second race. He was benefited by the good start and the early speed he showed for it kept him clear of interference for the entire way and he was well under restraint throughout. Theo Red raced forwardly, but his finishing in second place was probably on sufference and due mostly to the interference that Mamoud sustained by being put into close quarters during the last sixteenth. Pool had to take up sharply and it enabled Theo Red to beat him home by half a length. Pools claim of foul after the finish was not allowed. Mamoud was the favorite in the race. Bean King, which had been purchased before the races at an auction sale, made good for his new owner, C. H. Knebelkamp, and repair a good portion of the ,500 purchase price- when he was up to win by a nose from Minus, with BeautifuL Addle in third place. . Snow Maiden was the favored one here, but she was done for after following Minus to the stretch turn. There were two claims in the race, Snow Maiden going to Williams Bros, at a cost of ,500 and M. Shapoff taking Escapader at a cost of ,600. Winrock, grouped with other in the field furnished an upset in the sixth race, engaging some fairly good youngsters. The winner led from the start and after disposing of her earlier contenders had enough in reserve to stall off the determined bid made by Tinamou and My Destiny. The concluding race at a mile and a half broughtabout the victory of Sagamook from E- Coleman, with Fair Orient in third place. Ramkin was the favored one, but he ran one of his bad races and gave a forerunner of it at the post when ho began tardily. He moved into contention in the first mile, but suddenly began tiring and Svas far out of it at the finish. Sagamook came avay in the last eighth after H. E. Coleman had flattered extensively as a likelv winner.
