Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Dec. 20, 1904 Racing at New Orleans, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Edward Corrigan arrived at New Orleans this morning and spent the afternoon at Panama Park looking over ths plant. He was well phased with ihz progress of the work and expressed himself as satisfied that the course will be completed in two weeks. Telescope was worked out an extra eighth in his race today at New Orleans, which he won. This marked Telescopes fourth straight, victory at this meeting. Winnie OConnor has bean engaged to ride Tebscope in the Christmas Handicap Saturday and it will be the boys first mount at the meeting. By winning on Pacific in the first and Capitano in the fifth race at Ascot Park today jockey Eugene Hildebrand equalei in point of winners ridden the best record of anv jockey during the ten years beginning January 1, 1895. That record was 292, made by Charley Reiff in 1896. The leading riders in the other eight years were: 1895, C. Perkins, 192; 1897; H. Martin, 173; 1S9S, T. Burns, 277; 1899, T. Burns, 273; 1900, C. MitcheP, 195; 1901, W. OConnor, 253; 1902, J. Ranch, 276; 1903; G. C. Fuller, 239. That Hildebrand will beat this record is now as near a cerfainty as anything connected with horse racing ever gets to be and that he will during the remain ing ten days of racing for the year bring his total to 300 winners is based on his work at the Los Angeles meeting, a good even monjy proposition. During the twenty-three days of the meeting he has ridden twenty-six winners. On this form it is surely even money that he rides eight more winners in ten days. At any rate, it will be as interesting to watch him hustle for the 300 mark as it was to follow his approach of ReifFs record.
