JOCKEY SCHAEFER THE STAR Rides Marie Maxim and Runleg to Victory at Tijuana. • Horses Partial to HeaTy Going in Limelight at Border Track — Mareheta Defeats Seths Alibi. SAX DIEGO. Calif., April 8.— Due to the slowness of the track those horses which show a partiality for muddy going were much in the lighUight at Tijuana this afternoon. Few close contests resulted and, as was the care Tuesday, the winners had comfortable margins at the finish. Form, as a whole was. however, well observed, first or second choices being the victors in the majority of races. L, Schaefer took the saddle honors for the afternoon, riding Marie Maxim and Runleg t » well-earned victories. The fifth race provided an interesting contest when Olds Eight in the early stages was rated back of the pacemaker to the stretch, from where he easily tock the lead and won well in hand. The f ture was the surprising showing of T. J. Pendergast, which finished second, lie was ignored in the betting. At the finish he came with a tremendous rush and got up in time to head Canute at the end. The Brown Shasta Stock Farm Stables Shasta King was an easy winner of the opening race. After the first eighth it was Shasta King leading and Samaron in second place and they finished in that order. Shasta King began from an outside post position and crcssing over sharply, secured a winning lead in the first eighth. Samaron was in a tangle at the start but made a determined effort to catch the leader. He gained steadily until the final sixteenth where he tired suddenly. Maimonides was knocked back Just after the start but made up ground gamely when he found racing room. Happy escaped the early jam but was outrun at all times. Alborak and Minnie Bomba were knocked out of all chance with the rise of the barrier. The favorite made good in the second when Runleg. much the best, took command at the stretch turn and went on to win easily from Dan Arvi, the early pacemaker. Runleg raced forward gradually and coming wide in the best part of the track on the turn for home drew away in the final eighth. Dan Arvi showed a hgh flight of speed but gave way readily when the winner challenged. Monopoly took the short way and came from far back to take third place. Vanderburg was away slowly but once in his stride raced forward rapidly and was a fast finishing fourth. Favored by her light weight. Mareheta, chestnut daughter of Disguise, which races for the Rancho Wikiup Stable of John H. Ros-seter. displaying great speed, easily took the measure of the odds-cn favorite Seths Alibi in the third race. Mareheta made every pest a winning one and was under stout restraint at the finish, a winner by two lengths. Seths Alibi was just as decisively best of the others and had no trouble outstaying Shasta Express for second place. The latter left the barrier in a jam and was slightly impeded during the early racing, but it is doubtful if he could have got near the winner this afternoon. W. Fenwick furnished the winner of the fourth when his eight-year-old mare. Marie Maxim, proved that she could still win races. Barriskane took second while Kirk-wood was doing his best and just beat Stamp in the last f.fty yards for third. Marie Maxim was off rather slowly but worked her way up gradually and finding a opening when entering the stretch easily passed the leaders and won off by herself. Barriskane saved ground on all the turns and finished well. Kirkwood was favored by the soft track. Stamp made several attempts to head the pacemakers but was not good enough and finally quit. Emma Williams and Wild Thoughts raced one another into defeat in the first half. Seths Alibi was claimed by A A. Baroni for 00. •
