Va., April 8— W. J. Potters Brilliant scored a rather handy victory over Belpre and Seths Bacon in the Derby Trial, fifth and feature race at the Tri-State Fair Grounds this afternoon and as a result will likely rule favorite for the West Virginia feature to be run here on Saturday. Jockey L. Partington had the son of Broomstick under restraint until reaching the far turn, then moved into an easy lead and held a lengths advantage all through the final eighth. Belpre made a gallant ef- i I fort in the stretch to get to the winner, but i was not quite good enough. Although tiring badly Seths Bacon was an easy third ahead of Bosamond, the pacemaker, which flattened out in the run home. Again favorable conditions prevailed and a good mid-week day crowd witnessed the sport. Jedburgh Abbey proved to be best of the sprinters which faced the starter in the Ironton Purse, the secondary feature, run as the fourth race. Idle Seth cut out the early running with the winner in close pursuit. When called upon in the stretch the Church representative took command and held Remnant safe at the end. Remnant closed considerable ground from a slow beginning. Dorothy Buckner was third. A spirited and interesting finish marked ! the running of the sixth race in which Panorel led throughout but was doing* his best | to outlast Apology. The latter closed much : j ground in the last half mile. The Almoner ] ] outlasted Clansman for third. Bacing in the colors of the Brackman ! Sable, the locally-owned Seths Premium 1 just got up in the closing strides to capture! J the initial dash from the pacemaker. Topsy. Our Seth secured the short end of the purse | I after going extremely wide while rounding i i the stretch turn. The favorite. Pretty Bill, I I could never get to the leaders. Floy Lillie lasted longer today and she had ! j sway by a comfortable margin at all stages j j of the second race. Joe Joe began slowly, but closed fast in the stretch and disposed of Due de Guise for second place. Finishing with a well-timed rush through the stretch Messines ran over the tiring leaders to score a handy victory in the third, which attracted a bulky field. Galleon, a forward contender from the start, saved second place from Dora Lutz. which gained steadily from a slow beginning.
