COTNERS FAST WORK • Gallops Mile in 1:41% Over Churchill Downs Course. — ♦ Colt Impresses Watchers By Easy Manner of Running — Brave Bob Quite Forward. ♦ EOriSVIEEE, Ky., April 8.— Lee O. Cotner showed a most impressive Derby gallop and turned in the fastest mile of the spring training season, when at Churchill Downs this morning he went a mile in the comparatively good time of 1 :41% and pulled up sound. The fine showing of the son of Last Coin or High Time caused no end of favorable comment and boosted his Derby stock to a considerable degree. The work watchers were impressed with his ease of striding and the evenness of the trial. From a time standpoint the work was easily the best of the spring season. As in his last two previous gallops Lee O. Cotner, Wednesday morning, ran in blinkers, trainer Lon Jones having found that he runs too fast when not equipped with them. Jockey Pease piloted the colt in his preliminary gallop, but made way for jockey Willie Fronk for the trial. Lee O. Cotner was on his good behavior. | Bourbon Boy, a four-year-old stablemate, j acted as pacemaker. The pair began from I the five and one-half furlong post, with Bourbon Boy in the lead. Fronk kept the Derby colt about a length and a half to the rear of the pacemaker to the final eighth, where he let the colt have his head and, gaining on Bourbon Boy, he finished the distance a neck back of Col. Arthur Boards colt. Trainer Lon Jones had instructed Fronk to allow the Derby colt to go the mile in i ! about 1 :13 and the rider carried out his I j instructions as best he could. He rated the colt nicely, having a steadying hold on him at all times. About midway of the j I home stretch. Fronks right foot became : dislodged from the stirrup and in reach- | ing down to replace it the boy momentarily , i lost control of his mount, the incident caus- , I ing him to swerve slightly. The watches , I caught Lee O. Cotner in the following frac- ! | Itions: 24%, 49%, 1:15%. Bourbon Boys j time for the mile was 1 :42, a most credit-! able move. I J. C. Ferriss Derby hope Brave Bob, one j of the best seasoned Derby aspirants in local I training, turned in a creditable three-quarters when he ran the distance in 1 :17%. He j was cantering all the way and then gal- j j loped out the seven-eighths in 1 :34. | Bussell Cave was also permitted to go three-quarters, which he rattled off in 1 :17%. With a lightweight boy he galloped out seven-eighths in 1 :31%.
