LEE 0. COTNER FAST ♦ Hangs Up Best Time For Mile Shown at Downs This Spring. ♦ Runs Mile in 1:41% Most Impressively — Quatrain Sound as Ever. ♦ LOUISVILLE. Ky.. April 21.— Lee O. Cot-ner, R. W. Collins highly-regarded candidate for the Kentucky Derby, supplied the star move this morning at Churchill Downs, when he galloped a mile in the fastest time of the entire spring training season. The strapping colt covered the mile in 1:41%. His best previous time for a mile was 1 :41%, in his workout April 8. As in all of his workouts, Lee O. Cotner accomplished his task with ease and was under a pull all the way. He was again accompanied by Bourbon Boy, a stablemate, but Colonel Boards four-year-old was not in a running mood and could not keep within striking distance of the Derby colt at any time after going the first quarter. The pair began at the stand and Lee O. Cotner without any delay rushed out in front and headed his pacemaker to the end. W. Fronk was aboard Lee O. Cotner and for the first time the colt ran without blinkers. He went at rather a fast pace for the first half, but slackened up a trifle for the remaining portion of the distance. He covered the eighth in :12, quarter in :23%, half in :47%, three-quarters in 1 :14 and the mile in 1:41%. UNDECIDED ABOUT EASTERN TRIP. He then galloped out another eighth in 1 :55%. Bourbon Boys mile was caught in 1:42%. The Derby colts workout was witnessed by owner Collins, who voiced the opinion of trainer Lon Jones that it was most satisfactory. Mr. Collins is still undecided about shipping Lee O. Cotner to Maryland to start in both the Dixie Handicap and the PreakneFs Stakes and will come to no decision in the matter ur.til the colt has 1 .d another work. Owner Frederick Johnsons face was wreathed in smiles after Quatrain worked a slow half mile in :r 2%, and came out of his work without displaying any signs of soreness. The colt moved along in fine style and, apparently, is again perfectly sound in limb. Horsemen who closely scrutinized the colt as he galloped all gave expression to this opinion. Trainer C. C. Van Meter gave Annihilator and Abstract their most ambitious gallop cf the spring season when he sent the pair a mile in 1 :44%. Their best previous time for the mile was 1 :45%, which they reeled off April 7. These colts are steadily advancing in their training and will be in prime condition by the time the Derby Day rolls around. ZEIGLER CANDIDATES WORK. Trainer Bill Speirs gave Borderland and Needle Gun their most impressive workouts since the stables arrival here. The two I er-by aspirants that are scheduled to sport the colors cf William Zioi;ler in the Derby went out together and rattled off three-quarters in 1:15. The colts ran most impressively and by their manner of running it was impossible to select the better of the two. They ran the quarter in :21Vs and the half in :48%. Jockey Ponce was aboard Borderland, while Kddie Lenahan piloted Needle Gun. Captain Hal again made a fine impression when he went three-quarters in 1 :16%, cantering all the way. The quarter was run in :24%, half in :49%, and live-eighths in 1 :02%. Drowsy Waters, accompanied by John, Hager, negotiated a half in :49%, reeling off the quarter in :24. Air Castle, accompanied by Gliding Fox. a Kentucky Oaks candidate, showed up well by working a mile in 1 :4y%. The filly only went three-quarters, covering the distance in 1 :21%. Lon Johnson sent Klsass a slow mile in 1 :53. Baalbec galloped three-quartes in 1 :21, while Slice went a similar distance in 1 :18. Boon Companion had 1yroot as a running mate in his gallop of one mile. Pyroot could not make Boon Companion extend him-Belf at any stage and dropped out after goinp three-quarters in 1 :22%. Boon Companion galloped out the mile in 1 :50%. Louis Jtu-benstein galloped five-eighths in 1 :0D% for trainer Jake Iowenstein and Rambler went out with Kitcat II. and galloped three-eighths in :37. Frederick Johnsons Oaks candidate, Princess Adele, showed a praiseworthy gallop when she rattled off a mile in 1 :45, covering the half in :50% and the three-quarters in 1:2C%. This filly is fit and ready for her engagement in the Oaks, which will mark her first start of the year.
