HEAVY TRACK AT DOWNS • Captain Eal Works Well in Mud Goes Three-Quarters in 1:17. » Quatrain Out for Short Gallop — E. B. McLeans Biff Stable Arrives — Swingalong In a Bad Way. » LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 30.— Of the dozen or more Derby celts stabled and training at Churchill Downs few of them were asked , to go far Thursday morning. Several were given gallons at three-quarters, with the remainder being sent the customary slow gallops of once around the course. Captain Hal, the Black Toney colt that is attracting a large local following, gave further indication of his high flight of speed when he went three-quarters in 1:17. The fractions were: :25, :50, 1:03%. The track was quite heavy, perhaps worse than it has been any time during the recent rains. The colt showed exceptionally well, as he was only cantering all the way. It was a bet r gallop than the recent mile he worked when the track was also muddy a few days ago. Quatrain went a quarter mile hard held, being timed in 25 seconds. He showed his usual sterling mud running qualities. Louis Rubenstein, of the Cincinnati Stable, showed a very good gallop when he worked three-quarters in :49%, 1:18. It was accomplished easily. Russel Cave, another Derby eligible, worked seven-eighths in :52, 1 :10, 1 :34. This was also a nice move and the colt was running easily at the end. Slice, L. T. Coopers Derby entry, was sent three-quarters and the Spanish Prince II, colt went easily in 1 :21. Trainers who had hopes for a better track and warmer weather were disappointed. It rained again the night before and a cold wind blew all forenoon. The extensive stable of B. B. McLean, numbering twenty-one horses, has arrived at Churchill Downs from Maryland. They are in charge of trainer John F. Schorr and unloaded in good condition. Dr. Harthill reports that Swingalong, the good sprinter belonging to H. S. Hart, stabled at Douglas Park, is in a serious way from pneumonia. Fanna, a two-year-old filly in Shelby Wests stable, is likewise a very sick horse, with small chance for recovery. No attempt is being made by Black Golds trainer to resume conditioning last years Derby winner at the present time. He will be given ample chance to recover from his recent lameness and an effort made later to bring him to the races in the fall. E. C. Knebelkamp was an arrival from Cleveland Thursday, in the interests of the Ohio State Jockey Club. He was busy among the hrosemen here and distributed blanks for the 0,000 Derby to be run at Maple Heights May 23. This race is at a mile and an eighth with allowances for non-winners of stated amounts. Spic and Span of the McGill stable will likely be a starter in the Clark Handicap on opening day at the Downs. This racer finished third to Atherstone In the rich Coff-roth Handicap at Tijuana after a rough journey. Boon Companion was brought out for a gallop Thursday morning, but the North Star III. colt gave evidence right away of a cold with a discharge from his nose and trainer Al Woodman immediately returned him to the stable without moving him out of a walk. While awaiting further developments, the trainer does not regard it as being especially alarming. Kay Speneo, trainer of the Audley Farm Stable, and Al Kirby, the Island Farm Stables trainer, were both visitors at Churchill Downs Thursday morning, from Lexington.
